Have I broke my bike???....

I did the FZ1 Bar change over last weekend. A couple of minor problems with shorting out the Heated Grips, but other than that no problem.

Did the Changeover Saturday, rained Sunday, rode to work on Monday. It was a very cold morning and the bike struggled to start for the first 2 attempts, hitting the starter. But started on the 3rd attempt. Nice 30 minute ride to work, worked for about 9 hours, went to go home, the bike started straight away, no hint of a problem at all. Rode 30km home.

Tuesday morning - NOTHING! Well everything lights up, dash, indicators, heated grips, horn, fuel pump whirring. Starter Switch does NOTHING. No sound at all.

I have searched and read about possibility of the battery not being up to full charge to give the starter enough power. Would this be the case after half hour or more of riding? Was thinking of putting it on charge this afternoon to see if that does anything. Should I try jump start it (read that can be difficult)? Buy a new battery? Take it to someone who knows (bike mechanic/dealer)?

Charge the battery, first. What wattage are the grips? If you drew the battery 'down' during the install, and rode it at quite moderate engine speeds, it could well have not replenished the charge.

I'd look at the idiot switches before I got too much more involved. Than that.

If either the side stand 'deployed' or the clutch 'engaged' micro switch are gummed up, you will get some really odd starter 'logic'.

Remember the bike has to be in a 'qualified' state, to start.

Side stand up, clutch lever pulled in, and you can start it in gear.

With the bike in neutral, neither one has to be 'qualified'.

If the side stand switch sticks in the 'down' position, the bike will start in neutral, but die as soon as you put it in gear.

If the clutch switch sticks in the clutch 'out' position, the bike will not start in gear at all, will start in neutral, and die when you put it in gear.

Both should be excercised, to ensure they open and close the contacts when they are supposed to.

Don't know what I did, but I got home Monday night and I've put the bike on the Centre Stand, with the Side Stand still down, and possibly still in gear. Surprise, surprise - Side Stand up, in neutral, it starts:cheer:

Put that in the embarrassing moments file.

Don't know what I did, but I got home Monday night and I've put the bike on the Centre Stand, with the Side Stand still down, and possibly still in gear. Surprise, surprise - Side Stand up, in neutral, it starts:cheer:

I've shut the engine off by coming up and forgetting to put it in neutral before extending the kick stand... The first time I wondered what happened, it's a nice feature because it would have been worse if I would have gotten off and released the clutch still in gear. :spank:

Sometimes it's the simple things. I had a battery terminal come loose on me. The bike died and wouldn't start and I put it away for the winter thinking wtf did I do? A friend of mine came over to take a look and found the problem.. I was glad it wasn't anything serious.
