Handlebar clamps?

Has anyone swapped out the OEM one-piece clamp for two smaller, individual clamps? This would free up a few inches of handlebar between the controls for GPS/phone/etc mounts.

Are universal clamps for this sort of application even available?

the pre 07 models have 2 pieces that go over the bar part # 4H7-23441-01-35ronayers.com

These require the pre-07 socket-type bolts as well. The 10mm head bolts from my 09 don't fit.
