Had my first test ride

I was lucky enough to have a friend let me try his '07. I'm coming off an Yamaha Roadstar 1700 so you can imagine my shock at the difference in the two bikes. I kept finding myself trying to find a higher gear as the RPM's kept telling me to shift up yet I was in 6th already. The RPMS sounded high but I was only around 4000 and was only going 42mph. I realize that the power characteristics are totally different than my 1700 but I'm wondering if I'll ever get used to louder noise level where the true power is. I'm pretty sure I can get used to the differences but I'm not looking for race track performance, just a fun bike to ride. When I sold the RS my wife thought that was it and here I am looking again! I've found some low miles '07's under $5K so maybe if I can get one cheap enough that'll help me w/my decision. Need help in talking me out of this OR talking me into it! (not sure this forum is the place for objectivity!)

Honestly, it sounds to me like this bike is not for you. Of course you can get used to it, but why would you want to? You are used to heavier machine happily running at 2k rpm.
If you want a relaxed sport touring experience, perhaps you should look elsewhere. I highly recommend Suzuki Bandit 1250. It can be had for about the same price as FZ6 (maybe just a bit more money) and is much more relaxing to ride, in terms of RPM. Loads of low end torque, very little vibration and very good handling.
Downside would be extra weight (500 vs 420 for FZ6) which of course makes it less flickable in the twisties.
There's also FJR1300, but that's quite a bit more $$$

If you can afford it, DO IT! It really is a fun bike as you have found out. There's nothing wrong with having a cruiser and a sporty bike. Are you on any of the roadstar forums? Roadstar clinic?

Keep in mind that the bike redlines at 14k, and power peeks around 10-12k. Use it. 40 in 6th is way too slow.

You get used to it pretty quick. Before you know it you'll be at 10,000 saying to yourself, "I should probably shift.....soon"

Thanks Erci - I am willing to change my riding mentality. I left the cruiser world because they were too big. I know an FZ won't criuse at 2k and I'm sure I can adjust quickly, I was just wanting some opinions on how long my 'transition' would take. I also have to get over the notion that I am revving it too high at 4k! That'll come I'm sure

You could always train yourself with a shift light. Install it then go out on the bike and ride without worrying about your rpms and just pay attention to the light.
