Good backroads in NJ/elsewhere close to NY

Hey all,

I know Erci has had some riding days before in PA/NJ, and sadly I missed them, but after commuting to Manhattan daily, I am in desperate need of some non broken, non-taxied, non traffic roads to free my mind on the weekends. :confused:

Anyone from the NYC area have some suggestions? I'm in Brooklyn if that's a decent point of reference.

If you are willing to drive up north, there are some really nice areas in the Bear Mountain region. I go to school around there and always find some new areas to zip around on.
 
it's a bit of a ride for you, but how about 9W, 9A. Decent roads, very scenic. Also, route 22. Then, there is CT - route 7, route 53, route 58.
 
It's a 50 mile ride from Brooklyn to here.. and there's LOTS of good stuff here :D
 
hey man im in ny....this is my usual ride very TWISTY for sure! i first hit up county road 106 in harriman state park(roads are a little narrow), then go straight to rt 17A(sweepers) towards warwick county...then head back down both roads to the palisades interstate parkway to either bearmountain or a little more north to rt 218 in cedar falls(really nice road just be careful a lot of blind turns n narrow)....if u still wanna keep riding head down towards bear mountain go over the bridge n follow rt 9D to cold springs and go down rt 301(watch out for cops there are couple) to carmel...then head back n hit up peekskill hollow road.:thumbup:

Hell yeah! Absolutely wanna do few group rides this year. Just gotta work them in around the crazy schedule (teaching MSF several weekends.. trip to FL for over a week.. and gotta spend time with the wife).

When do we wanna set the first one up?!
 
There are good back roads west of i-287 corridor in Jersey. My favourite is county routes that crosess Rt23 up to high point into NY. Here's a short 3 hr route, close to NYC Clinton Rd to NJ-23 - Google Maps. You can extend this route to Bear mtn as mentioned by QwickFliCk.

Another spot we should do this season is Hawks nest, near Port jervis

No, much longer and great higher-speed sweepers between Port Jervis and the Hawk's Nest if not too much traffic. From Port Jervis, stay on 97 past the Hawk's Nest, jump over the Roebling Bridge (a one-lane bridge at Minisink Ford) onto 590 west, take the twisties to Hawley (stay on 590), left on Rt 191, left onto 507 (which ends up a lap of Lake Wallenpaupack), back to Hawley and back-trace.

You can scrape the pegs or enjoy some good roads and scenery along the Delaware. You pick.

Erci's got some great roads is NJ as well

Just came from Hawks Nest two weeks ago, it was a nice ride. There's construction on the top so only one lane for a short bit. There's a decent bike stop at the bottom called "Cedar Rapids", go ask for a "Matilda"...... you'll enjoy it but only have one. We were told the road up ahead past the stop is long and winding. We didn't go for it since it was getting late, I googled the distance to central jersey and it was 120miles thru 17 & 23 and finally 287.
You'll enjoy it there.

Yeah man sounds great... my schedule is crazy w 2 small girls... but I am always willing to try and find time... hit me up next time!
 
Most of the Fairfield County, CT has good back roads, plus some parts of east Westchester County, NY. This is where I'm spending most of my mind freeing time on the bike.

Pound Ridge, NY, Redding, CT, Ridgefield, CT, Wilton, CT, New Canaan, CT. They all have nice back roads (though it's mostly residential area). Most of them are not for high speed riding, but great turns and away from cars.

Devil's Den (route 53 and 57) is a beautiful place to ride around.

For more speed and good roads I'd go north of Danbury,CT (like Route 7 and 22).

Kent, CT area (north of Danbury) is the motorcycle gathering area on sunny Sundays.
 
I live in Manhattan and commute to work in Stamford CT on the bike every day..I am ALWAYS down for some nice carving on the weekends.

Anyone wants to organize a ride, count me in!
 
Yeah! If I do go and someone else form NYC decides to go, we can meet on the way up.
 
I am 75% in (Brooklyn) - baby is sick and delicate time until later this week. Will update that CT thread thurs/fri morning. Not sure I can keep up w/ an FZ1 though :)
