gas gauge not reading correctly!!

hey guys! thanks for the help in advance. I just picked up an 05 FZ6 with only 6k miles on it. Its an epic bike but for some reason the gas gauge is saying its empty...
now normally this would be fine except that theres almost a full tank of gas. when i filled it up it gave me only 2 bars. Don't know what the problem could be but when i rock the bike from side to side there is a knocking coming from inside the tank. I'm thinking something is loose? Any advice you can give is helpful!

Apparently the gauge is working as your getting two bars. NOTE:the fuel pump and the fuel level sender are two separate units that attach toegther. I suspect the float on the gauge arm is loose (probably your knocking sound). (should be obvious)

First, drain and remove the gas tank. There are several connectors under the tank, be gentle removing them.

Once the tank is off, you have to pull the fuel pump.

In the below pictures, the one with the orange circle(pic #2), is a tab to release the gauge from the pump (they snap together).

It is MUCH EASIER to remove the pump in two pieces from the tank.

**It does re-install as one unit.

In the first picture, its the pump and switch together. The bar hanging down IS the float arm that goes up and down (with a float on the end) that sends the level out, eventually to your fuel gauge.


The lower picture, with the circle around it is the fuel sender gauge wires.

Your reply is awesome and looks like it shows exactly how to do it. Im going to run the gas down in the tank and then drain whats left so i don't have to waste as much. Once i do the repair i will post back with what i found!

As stated earlier, get to that release tab, its a weird set up, but they will separate.

I have gotten mine out (before I learned about the tab-its NOT in the manual) without separating it, but its super tight and I really don't know why it DIDN'T BUST...

I suspect that float, on the end of that shaft, is loose, flopping about and binding up.. Not sure what holds it on (I forgot), probably one of those one-way push on clips (that you'll likely find, broke, in the tank)

BTW, to keep from scratching up the tank while upside down, I used a new small piece of carpet, with a super clean towel atop it, to set the tank on upside down.. Two, 2x4's under the carpet on each side will help keep the tank stable while upside down too..

The torque on the main pump retainer ring is pretty light, spec's are in the manual. Yamaha does want the large o-ring seal replaced but I've gotten several R&R's on one seal before I finally replaced it. If it looks at all funky, replace it, you don't want it leaking...

You need to get your eyesight checked or pull back on drinking. You said 6K miles on a 2005? Alright, I guess it's possible. You're not reading trip mileage, right? There are several mileage settings...at least on a 2007 model. Also, I've noticed that sometimes the fuel bars don't adjust immediately after adding fuel.

HAHA yeah its possible! 6181 miles and counting! The bike is pretty amazing.
