FZ6 Noise in High Gear

Hello, I bought a 2005 Fz6 a month ago and have been riding it almost everyday. A couple days ago I noticed a noise coming from the left side of the bike when accelerating onto the freeway. It's almost like a light metal grinding noise, I thought it was the chain so i cleaned it and lubed it back up, but the sound was still there the next day. It starts when i'm in the 4th gear and gets louder in the higher ones. the bike works perfectly well in the low gears, no noises and it still runs fine.

I'm not exactly technically inclined, but does anyone have an idea what this could be? any help would be much appreciated!

You want approx 2" TOTAL up and down MOVEMENT at the taughtest point.

If you can post some close up pictures of your sprockets would help (front AND back).

Do you know how many miles on the chain and sprockets?

Thanks for the advice, I'll try and get pictures of the sprockets this weekend. I made a small adjustment to the chain slack, I'll see if that fixes it the next time i ride.

Hey, I don't know how many miles are on the sprockets and chain, when i bought it i had a mechanic check it out and he said they were fine. The noise is still there after adjusting the chain slack. It's a little softer but it is still definitely there. Is there anything else on the left side of the bike that could make a noise?

A worn chain generally makes more noises at lower speeds but any kind of whine from the left side, the MAIN CULPRIT is the chain. Pictures of the sprocets would help.

The STOCK Yamaha, front sprocket has a plastic(?) ring around it just below the teeth to dampen noise. As the sprocket wears, that plastic gets worn and you'll get more whine from the front sprocket. Aftermarket front sprockets are usually noisier than the stock one. The front sprocket cover is held on with THREE ALLAN head bolts. It'll come off WITHOUT messing with the shifter linkage. I'll bet that sprocket is worn..

Can YOU measure the total up and down CHAIN play at the taughtest point and post it here.. Push the chain upwards, center a ruler on a pin, then push the chain downwards and measure the difference between the pins, that's your free play.

I ask that you check it as the FZ6 has about the loosest chain settings of most bikes. There have been threads on this forum, where YAMAHA MECHAINICS have way over tightened the chain which is very bad for the chain, sprocket bearing and rear hub sprocket.

PLEASE post that free play (needs to be on the center stand)
