FZ6 Diesel

So i found the following article on yamaha busy designing a diesel inline 4.

Imagine my surprise that the "graphic" they used was the fz6!!!

Interesting concept, although I wonder how much heavier the diesel engine will be when compared to the 600 cc gasoline motor.

I dont see any reason to hook up a diesel engine to a motorcycle. will be lower revving, torquey, sure, but I dont see it ever overtaking the Vtwin torque monster bikes...

all in all I dont think its very viable. will have to wait and see the figures though.

Well tell that to those performance diesel cars like Audi, Peugeot, and cummings, etc.. diesel can be tuned for very high performance, is more reliable and not as dirty running as most think. I hope that this is an option for Yamaha buyers.

Doesn't matter if it doesn't rev as high or fast as gasoline engines, you just gear it accordingly.

agree 100%, why? is the question that comes to mind...a diesel engine has
two distinct advantages over a gasoline one: better MPG, and a very flat
torque curve that is perfect for towing/hauling, there are several disadvantages:
noisy, due to the much higher compression ratios they need to be built
stronger so they are heavier, they require a more powerful starter and battery, again because of the comp. ratio and heavier internals, lacking spark ignition they are difficult to cold start and require a start aid in cold weather, they are a lot more expensive to manufacture, as for a motorcycle application, I can't see a single advantage, they are already pretty fuel efficient

OUR FRIENDS in the USA at hellforleather.com have unearthed firm evidence that Yamaha are in the process of developing an inline-four intercooled and turbocharged diesel.




you guys all missed these 2 very important lines!
turbo and intercooled
with those combs a 400cc diseal could make more torque rather easy than say a litre bike!

then again these engines would be for the likes of the big tourer style bikes where 1400cc engine is too big, a diseal could drop this to 600cc
then yammmi could offer factory trailer style setups as well as the bikes now have the torque to pull them and be warrented!

You could pull a travel trailer with it

For years the US military has converted KLR650 to run on diesel. Simply to have everything run on one fuel.

LOL, good thinking, would pull a trailer in the mountains like mofo :rockon:

and I get what your saying about the military and fuel commonality,
I've been on a NATO base for the last 9 months and gas is hard to come by
