First Service 800miles????

First off let me say that I'm new to the site and have been lurking for a while. I purchased my FZ about a month ago and have a little over 700 miles on the bike. My question is... Will I cause any problems if I wait till 800 miles before I do the first service? I am working all weekend and won't get a day off till next week. The bike should be close to 800 miles then. Thanks for any advice and comments.

you should definitely change your oil and filter as soon as possible. it takes maybe 10 minutes. your filter at this point is likely filled up metal shavings. the rest of the "600 mile service" is outlined in your manual and is also something you can do... check chain slack, alignment, lubes, bolt torques, etc.

So basicaly I should park the FZ until I can get around to doing the service, is that right? I do have other means of travel (07 Frontier) and can use it until the service is complete. I don't want to do anything that I might regret.

If you have all the supplys and tools sitting there the oil change should take less time than your daily shower. I say just change the oil then you wont have to worry about it anymore and you can get back to :Sport:

For what it's worth, I didn't change my oil until 1100 miles. I know it should had been changed much earlier, but I just coudn't squeeze the scheduled maintenance in due to various reasons, so I extended it. I have over 14,000 miles on my bike now, still runs good. I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Everyone had mentioned that they had difficulties taking off the factory oil filter, for me, it was the bolt. It was torqued so damn tight from the factory, it took me forever.

Too bad you didn't get the blue FZ6 version. Oil/filter changes are easier. Insurance rates are cheaper, gas mileage is better and top speed is higher. Oh, and trade-in value is increased. Seriously, in your case evacuate break-in oil ASAP (unless it's just going to park).

Um, yeah...


The worst oil to have circulating in your bike is the break-in stuff that is between 500-600 miles. I changed mine at 488 and put a longer oil filter in.

Use regular old SAE10W40 and go up to around 1000 miles before going to synthetic; this from two motorcycle mechanics with a combined 60 yrs experience. I am lucky to know those guys.

+1 on the filter being cruddy after break-in, and it only takes a half hour to change the oil, adjust chain tension and go over the bolts to make sure things haven't loosened up.


Be good to your bike and make no excuses for neglecting the basics, and you'll ride for many satisfying years on it.
