First MOT

Well the bike was booked in this morning for its first MOT. I arrived early, parked in the allocated area for MOTs , handed the keys over and went to the on-site cafe.

Sat and ate my sausage sandwich and cup of tea while they inspected her from stem to stern. So 50mins later, after looking at all the bikes for sale several times, including the FZ8 which was next the a FZ1 Fazer for the same price., the PA called me to collect my bike which had passed :Flash: with only one minor note of slight damage to the valve stem on the tyre, hmm.

So quite happy really.:thumbup:

There doesn't seem to be any consistency to MoT tests, I've had advisories about stuff that has passed the previous year, some trivial things picked up by some mechanics, some obvious fail things ignored/missed by others and this new fixed price that was introduced when it went computerised seems to have gone out of the window with huge variations in the price depending on where you go.

I think NSW has yearly roadworthy checks and VIC I think you have to have a roadworthy check before you sell a vehicle..

Really? Nothing in WA - we're lucky I guess. You can get pulled over and if they cops decide it's unroadworthy you can get a yellow sticker (can drive it to get it repaired and 30 days to repair - then take it over the pits) or red sticker (pull over, get it towed, repaired then take it over the pits).

Where in Birmingham did you get your MOT done & how much was it?

Really? Nothing in WA - we're lucky I guess. You can get pulled over and if they cops decide it's unroadworthy you can get a yellow sticker (can drive it to get it repaired and 30 days to repair - then take it over the pits) or red sticker (pull over, get it towed, repaired then take it over the pits).

That’s where I bought my bike from they do seem like a good bunch.

In the US it differs from state to state. Not sure about all of them but some states require an inspection every year and some require it only when the vehicle is sold (each sale). Although it is a hassle and you may face a repair because of it I think a yearly inspection is good due to the sheer amount of autos on the road in the US. Think about the guy who doesn't need an inspection each year following behind you with bald tires and no brakes.

We have safety inspections here in Nova Scotia as well. They just recently changed from annually to every other year. Same deal as Australia though. If a policeman thinks you are unsafe, they can order your vehicle off the road until it can pass a safety inspection. There are roving MOT agents who randomly inspect vehicles and inspection stations, and can fine either of them. When I was in Ontario, you only had to get a 'safety' done when you purchased a vehicle, or anytime one changed hands (ie. sold it, gave it away, etc.). At least we don't do emissions inspections here yet...

Mine's due beginning of September. It had a service last year and i've not put that many miles on this time. Fitted a new 'auxillary/sidelight' as that'd blown, but besides that, my FZ6 is running fine. So fingers crossed.

Something that people don't often know is that you can get your MOT up to a month before the date it runs out. The end date of the new MOT will be a year after the previous one runs out. So you can get 13 months out of it, if that makes sense. Also gives you time to fix any issues that crop up before you become illegal.
