I agree with some of the other comments that you really need to start with the 250 or 500 and the ninja is a great first bike choice. The chances are always there that you will drop your bike , but its much more likely when your are starting out. Dropping a used ex500 or ex250 makes you curse much less than dropping an FZ6 new or used.

I promise as a first bike you won't be missing anything, I owned a ex500 and it was a blast. I would go as far as saying that as a first bike you would enjoy the ex500 more than the FZ6. If you buy it used and decide to get the FZ6 next year chances are you will lose almost no money on it if you don't drop it. If you do drop it you will be happy that you haven't yet got the more expensive FZ.

As a new rider you will not outgrow the 500 in your first year, not if you are learning everything you should be about riding. If a first year rider says hes outgrown even a 500 then all he knows how to do is get on the highway and twist the trottle.

Can I ask some inquisitive questions from me on this side of the Atlantic - what age can you legally ride a bike on the road in the USA? Does it vary from state to state? Is there a stepped scheme i.e. you start on a restricted power or capacity bike and move up to more power/capacity only after a period of time?

Over here, we've now got the most complicated stepped/age scheme possible, it's a wonder anyone sticks it out to get a bike licence these days. Probably what the safety bureaucrats intend...

It varies by state. In Indiana, you can ride at 15.5 yrs if you have a licensed rider with you (on a different bike). While under 18 years of age or riding on a beginner permit, you must wear a helmet, not carry passengers, or ride at night.

Start ninja 250 or ninja 500 or any other small parallel twin or small v twin.

Best off to answer your questions, go into to history and go thru the pages, every question you have asked has been answered at least 50 times.

The absolute best thing you could do now though is get a good dirt bike and practice on it. Wear it out man.


Also go here and read the whole FAQ every word, dont ask any questions without reading every word in the FAQ. LOL they get alot more new riders than we do, and have less paitence for the same questions every day.

Maybe get a pocket bike and go to pocket bike races in full leathers with your dad. Get both of you one and have a blast.

mmm, I forgot to mention in my post; Up here in Calgary bikes dont lose value.

Ninja 250s still cost 5-7gs unless its run down and beat, then its about 4 grand.
I bought my FZ6 for 7100 OTD delivered to my body shop.

If I lived in the states where the stories seem to tell that they are very cheap and can resell at almost the same value, I would have hands down without a doubt bought a ninja 250.

If the pricing is that way in your area, go for the ninja first.
