I eventually got it on last night - just focused on keeping it parallel to the head while having the sprocket side a little further back than the other and it slips in. Noticed afterwards I'm missing one of the valve cover bolt washer/o-ring things and after looking all over I'm worried that it fell in to the head while I was fighting with getting the cover on so I'll be removing it again tonight to check...
