Excuse my ignorance but I am a car guy who owns and enjoys riding my FZ6. I am having a hard time understanding why exhaust systems are so expensive for bikes even the price for a set of cans is ridiculous. I can bild a complete trick ss exhaust system for my Mustang GT for less than a system for my bike. Why is that?

It is what it is, get used to it. In bike land we get hosed on the price of aftermarket stuff.

The only thing I can figure is there are a million dudes putting an exhaust on their Mustang, and not too many guys putting an exhaust on their bike. Also if you consider a "muffler" shop exhaust to be custom, vs. a nice MC exhaust they really are two different things. A "custom" Flowmaster isn't vs. a nice Borla. Most MC exhausts are SS, Ti, CF, etc. The "custom" exhaust on my old 'Burb was mild steel and rusted out in a few years.

Oh, you can get Scorpions for about $450 or so...

Just write the check and be happy.

we as a customer have no choice but to pay ridiculous amount of money for two pieces of metal. scorps carbon fibre oval cost SGD $1450..sigh

here's a tip. prentend not to look at the bill after paying for the pipes. might help. a bit

If you think you are getting "Hosed" re prices in the states...try this for size....it was $1000 Australian cheaper to buy my pipes through this site, than from the Distributor in Australia (Even after exchange rate, and shipping was factored in!)...oh and i got them in around 2 weeks, was going to take 8-12 weeks if i ordered them in Oz!!!!!

Our Market is even smaller, and hence, we get screwed on price, abvailablity, and shipping!

Still i see your point re the difference in prices of Pipes re Cars V's Bikes....same thing with Tyres....why are bike Tyres so much more expensive?

I feel your pain! Can someone explain how they can charge a $200 premium for carbon fiber Scorpions over the aluminum ones? I can't quite figure that out. On that note, I think I've decided to go without the exhaust..... I like the Scorpions but can't find the CF ones for under $650 (which is ridiculous), and at that price i might as well spring the $750 for the CF Two Bros. through the forum. But in the end I can't justify spending that much on 1 mod. So unless I find something used. No aftermarket exaust for this guy.

Price is all about willingness to pay. It has nothing to do with cost.

I could not agree more! I mean the bike MSRP is $7,290 and exhausts run anywhere from $550 to $1,000. And we are just talking the rear cans, no headers. So unless I trip over a bag of money, I will probably be staying stock.

but once you get the new cans on the bike.. You cant believe that you didnt do it sooner. I got M4s last year from the group buy. I really didnt want to spend that kind of $ on a mod... BUT when I got the cans and put them on. I was like WTF why didnt I do this earlier! Kinda felt like this video!

eh..I was looking up quality tires for my Jeep and came across the BFG Baja tire. $400 PER TIRE. huzzah for $120 for the bike.

but in all fairness, yes, bike parts are more. There just aren't as many of them.

ps: it also depends on what you're doing with your car. Modding an offroad truck to competitive offroad (as a lot of people do to bikes for the track) costs WAY more than modding a car for just the street. haha, it's all expensive!

all this talk about the exhausts being expensive and all got me thinking... All these things are is a center pipe with holes in it, wrapped in some sort of fiberglass packing, with a shiny casing on the outside.... why couldn't you make that on your own?

I work in a shop that has full capabilities of fabbing just about anything you want including welding stainless. I have thought about getting a set of car mufflers and modifying them. It could be a fun and interesting project. Flowmaster makes a line of mufflers called hushpower and they sell a muffler tha is 2.00"IN/2.00"OUT, 12" CASE, 304S and 4" X 5" in width. This is why I was asking what the deminsions of a set of say two brothers cans or similar. By the way these mufflers sell for $152.90 each suggested retail. Big diff in price huh. These are not cheap junky mufflers either.

I didn't want to spill the beans, but you can fit a set of R1 slip ons on the fz6,it takes a bit of welding and there a whole lot cheaper,you can get a set of stock R1 pipes for less than $100 on ebay.Just an idea.

Sounds like a good project.

Is the price of the mufflers retail or wholesale? The reason I ask is if you use two mufflers (assuming that price is wholesale), add in labor, hardware, brackets, etc, you are right at $650 to $750 for a MC exhaust system.

How much do they weigh? The stock system is 12.1 lbs, and my Ti Akros are about 7 to 8 lbs. So keep the total weight in mind too, heavy ain't good.

Let us know what you come up with. It would be great to see a reasonably price alternative.

I have been thinking hard about getting some stainless scorpions for a while but kept finding myself trying to justify the purchase spending many hours on the net looking at prices.Having had a few conversations with fellow member Nakedj he more then once said " do it you will not regret the purchase cos I think mine are awesome"(so its all your fault Jordan :spank: :rof so I finally did it and ordered them yesterday.I am hoping they will come before xmas so they can get installed before returning to work and get some miles in with them on.

The Akro cans are 11" x 5" X 3 3/4s. The length doesn't include the tips.
