Environmental Shakedown, Ontario Style

While I was away it appears the Comrades running the province have snuck
in another green tax. Never heard a peep about it. Bought some oil and a
filter yesterday at Canadian Tire and happened to look at the receipt afterwards.
There's two mysterious entries for something called: ecofee. Totals a little
over a dollar. Did some googling and turns out it is a fee for handling used
oil and filters. At a shop I understand this, I leave the nasties there and
it gets dealt with. Now I've paid to dispose of the stuff and I still have it,
WTF is with that?!!! Two jugs of synthetic and a filter for my truck equals
$47.13. After the gov shake-down (fees and taxes) I fork over $56.46,
OUTRAGEOUS!!!! :rant:

Hmm...how much is "two jugs?" Two gallons? If it's two gallons, that doesn't seem too far off, at least in my neck of the woods (I realize you're ranting about a tax in your local area...just giving perspective.)

A gallon of Shell Rotella T full synthetic at Wal-Mart here is right at $20. And an oil filter will run anywhere from $4-$8 (depending on brand, type, etc.) So, if you're meaning gallons when you say jugs, two gallons of synthetic for me would be $40 plus the cost of the oil filter...so $44-$48 before tax.

It sucks that they've seemingly slipped a new tax past you, but you're paying about what the rest of us are, at least in my area. :thumbup:

Here in CA we have an electronic envioronment fee and it's about $10-15 USD everytime you buy a monitor, TV, etc.. Afterwards, we see big ads and stuff about "free" ewaste recycling events (schools, churches, etc.) but it's NOT FREE! We already paid for it! (and we don't get a cent back after recycling it.) Sorry to hear about your increased pain now about the oil and filter.

It's not to be confused with the government of Ontario's electronics Eco Fee. Either way it's crap.

Yeah, read about that Stewardship Ontario crap, so they get the money,
and I still have the dirty oil/filter, that's my issue, I paid a disposal fee and
have the choice of being a douche and dumping them or paying again at
a HazMat facility.

But we do get that stupid HST cheque next week...wouldn't it be cheaper for them NOT to do the Harmonized Sales Tax and then they wouldn't have to ship out $1000 per family and $300 for single folks?!

Hmm thinking on this a bit as I typed. This is a 1 time payout, but we will most likely be paying HST for the rest of our natural lives. With increases as "they" see fit. Maybe I had it bass-ackwards.
