I personally think everyone needs to lighten up a lil bit! I think he is hilarious! Sounds to me like many people need to be a little more open minded when it comes to music.....

Of the genre Beastie Boys are my faves. Don't take themselves too seriously and they don't bang on about ho's and bitches and drugs and guns and murder.

Guess I'll be the minority here and say that I happen to enjoy a lot of rap, including a lot of Eminem's music. But that is just hilarious...

Whew! I was worried about you for a minute, Matt. I've been listening to the Beasties for over 20 years now, and have loved every second of them. I've seen them many times in concert, and they just keep getting better. In fact, License to Ill was the first album I ever bought.
Back to the thread topic, I watched the awards show tonight and the whole thing was staged (and really funny). I saw Eminem on Jimmy Kimmel the other night and he showed that he's not only compassionate (he personally arranged for enough Detroit Auto Workers to be taken to the show to fill the studio audience), but he has a sense of humor. He's a real good dude, and regardless of whether I like his music, I respect him.
He is putting on the tough rapper front because he has to, but it was clear from the Kimmel episode that he's a good guy. Just go to youtube and search "Eminem Kimmel". Eminem has been on several times, but the most recent one is called "Eminem talks about his new album release". If you have time, also watch the basketball clip from a couple of years ago, it's hilarious.
Anyway, I'm convinced that the thing was staged and Eminem was as cool with it as Sasha Cohen (who is another funny MF by the way).

Saw them at Glastonbury 1995 (I think). They were on mid-afternoon on the second stage. It was pissing with rain but they were brilliant, best set of the weekend.

I'm sorry if I sounded pompous. Truth is, "rappers" like him bug me. They take a formula and make music by it. His first album may have been a form of self expression (which hip-hop should be), but every album after that was a money-making endeavor.
Music is largely personal preference, but I base my favorite artists by creativity, originality, and lyrical flexibility.
Aesop Rock, J5, Roots, Atmosphere, Viktor Vaughn, Gnarles Barkely, Del/Hieroglyphics, Gang Star, Mos Def/Blackstar, Tribe called Quest, and De La Soul come to mind.
These are artists who do not rely on their producers to tell them what's hot. They just make music that they like, and it happens to be really good. Some are complicated and difficult to enjoy the first time you listen to them, but they get better them more you listen and uncover more and more layers each time. Others are easier to enjoy at first, and are more melodic.
If you enjoy the genre even the slightest, give them a try. Sample them for free at iTunes and see if they sound interesting. But please, stop listening to Jay-Z, and The Game, or those fools. It's all "canned music."

Excellent! Yes, they really put on a great show, no matter what. I saw them at Coachella in 2003, in winds so great that records were blowing off Mixmaster Mike's turntable, but they didn't even blink. They knew it was all about the crowd and they still managed to put on an excellent show.

I guess I see what you are saying. Didnt mean my comment to be rude, I was just generally curious as to what the "good" rappers are. Gnarles Barkley? No way. Cant stand him. Gang Star and Mos Def/Blackstar arent bad. Havent even heard of a couple of the ones you mentioned. Maybe that is due to the fact that I am young? Not a big Jay-z or Game fan. I do like a song or too but they arent part of my normal music group. Maybe I just like Eminem?:ban:

There are certain qualities that make up a good rapper.
1. They create their own music instead of sampling from other songs.
2. They can actually rhyme instead of forcing a rhyme as many do these days. If you have to force a rhyme, you need to go back to the thesarus.
3. Their songs are about something other than,"I'm the best rapper with the biggest dick. All the bitches and ho's want me, but I slap them anyway. Then I get high, drink a 40 and drive my car around shooting people."
Example of a good rapper. Ice T. Good lyrics, good music, and while sometimes he rapped about the above topics, many of his songs advocated personal responsibility. "Nobody put the crack in to the pipe. Nobody made you smoke off your life. You thought you could do dope and still be cool? Fool. You played yourself."
I enjoy Eminem and for the people that posted up and admitted it, check out Asher Roth... he is similiar, I like his stuff too, not quite as controversial.
