I was just thinking about hooking up with smokenu and a few others for a Cali Ride from San Diego to Monterey during a weekend in May. I was trying to come up with a good way to carry a sleeping bag with me when it hit me....

Spring $50 for a hotel bed/shower and leave the sleeping bag behind.

as a side-note, a sleeping bag fits wonderfully inside a givi case or saddlebags. And if you're not carrying a passenger, you can lash a pretty large duffelbag to the seat easily enough.

You want to keep extra weight on the bike as low as possible, so it doesn't upset the center of balance - saddlebags (evenly distributed) are ideal, top case is ok, tall tower off the back seat? probably best for appearance and not actually lashing things to.
