does your clutch pull feel "rough"?

I'm using the MotionPro cable lube and it's good stuff. I spent today doing an oil change, lubing cables and pivot points. Took the bike out for a spin...man oh man does fresh oil make the engine nice and smooth!

I just won a AVS shorty clutch lever on eBay. I'll post my thoughts on it after I use it for a bit.

If you want a smoother, easier clutch feel, go over to the sportbikes.net FZ6 site and pay Killernoodle $35 to modify your clutch slave lever. Basically he extends it in an adjustable way. I've been running that mod for several years and highly recommend it.

I'm missing something, my 07 fz6 has a cable operated clutch, there is no slave cylinder. Its a cable direct to the clutch lever, direct to the arm above the clutch... Or are you talking about modifying the lever itself?

Now my FJR is a hydralic clutch with hydralic lines, hydralic slave cylinder, etc...

I noticed that also.... I wonder how similar the FJR hydraulic system might be moddible to the FZ6? But now that my cable seems to be good?

I was supposed to hook up with a neighbor for a ride today but he's really slow these days so didn't want to invite and hold anyone back. He bailed and I ended up riding alone. I will still ride with slower riders so that they get experience. If I'd been doing a little faster ride I would have posted....
Shoot! I've hijacked the thread! Hahaha!

The handle bar lever etc, would fit fine between the two bikes. The FJR has a clutch slave cylinder on the left side of the engine (directly across from the center of the clutch). I believe (not sure) it has a push rod that goes thru the motor and when activated, pushes out the clutch pressure plate releasing the clutch/friction plates.... The FZ on the other hand has the clutch release lever on the right side side, just above the clutch (lever operated). I don't know of any conversion kits.....

The hydralic system needs occasional service (flush/bleed) as well but gives a smoother feel than a cable system... Again, in my opinion, there's nothing wrong/bad with a cable operated clutch, just a different system that needs more maintainance than a hydralic system....

I''ve been riding/working on motorcycles, dirt bikes/street bikes since 15 and am 51 now. I do most of my own wrenching on anything from a 125 2 stroke Yamaha,(70's) RD's, YZ's to my current FJR, KLR's(both 250 and 650), a Goldwing (04-sold), a couple of Harleys(sold) and several customers bikes, including a Concours, Suzuki B king, numerous BMW's, etc...

I had one bike, an 1980 Yamaha XS 650 (6k miles maybe, bought used) that tended to break clutch cables under the fuel tank, in the middle of the center cable itself. It was not kinked/bent etc.... I don't know why the center (moving) cable would fail however it did, several times..... Try clutching with your left hand with a short piece of cable sticking out under the carbs.......:)....

In my experiance, lubing the clutch cable and throttle cables make them work easier and last longer.... The actual tool that I use is better than 30 years old, single screw clamp and was made by YAMAHA.....(casted/sold by Yamaha at that time)..... If someone has better luck without lubing it, excellent! Just trying to help out a fellow rider.....

Thanks Scott,
Yeah if the cable pretty much stays as it is now I'll be okay with it. I'll just be more attentive to lubing it for now on. Still wouldn't mind a hydraulic though...

Killernoodle made some extended clutch slave levers that substantially increased the lever arm which proportionately softens the pull while extending the friction zone.

Okay I see what you mean. Good idea!

update:

wow i bought this tool for $10 and sprayed some chain wax in the cable tube and it smoothed out the cable action a lot!!!!!

Thats basically the same one I have. Mines black, single screw as well and says Yamaha (and is old). I think I'd use cable specific oil if possible unless your chain wax states its good for cables...

BTW. I'm not a fan of chain wax. Tried it for awhile, after some time, my chain actually started to rust while using it. Gave that away.... I service my chain approx every 150 miles (unless I get caught in the rain).

FWIW, I think our clutch is just harder to pull than on other bikes. I had my bike into the dealer yesterday and even he said that the clutch felt tight and recommended lubing. I usually lube it myself, but he said he would clean it out, then lay down a fresh layer of lube. He did all of the above and I can't really feel a difference.

Would be good to find a brand new FZ6 at a dealership and test the clutch to see what the tension is like. That should be about the lightest action FZ6 clutch around.

Now if someone could extend the arm/lever (above the clutch[right side case) some and re-attach the lower cable end, it would give more leverage (easier pull) AND widen up the friction zone some....

That's the tool I also use but this time I used silicone lubricant and the clutch pull stayed good through out my entire ride....

Scott I think that's what the killernoodle thing is. See post#27...That's a great idea!

I just clicked on his pic in post #27, looks like your right!!! Any links on purchasing his arm?

As I noted earlier, Killernoodle is a moderator on the FZ6 forum over at sportbikes.net. I'm a bit leery about posting a direct link as most mods do nasty things when one links to a competitive forum. Anyway, you can PM him over there. I believe he's charging $35 nowadays.
