I have just dislocated my shoulder playing Gaelic football. I think I did it pretty bad. I want to know if other people have dislocated there shoulders and still ride or if that can cause you to pop you shoulder out again.

Thanks in advance

Get it checked out..... but you should be fine. Physical Therapy is good thing. It will ensure you keep the range of motion you are supposed to have.

Speaking from crashing my '05 resulting in a Class A separation of my right shoulder, plus 3 broken ribs...... seriously, get it checked out. If PT is recommended, get on with it as soon as you are told to do so.

I crashed on my stupid dirt bike last fall (sold the damn thing finally) and seperated my left shoulder but I had no insurance at the time so I didn't do PT at a dr. but did it myself, (know a phys. trainer) still a little less strength than right one, so I wish I would have stuck to a good PT regiment. You really should get it checked. and do the PT. Hope you feel better soon.

Just a point of information: There is a difference between a dislocated shoulder and a separated shoulder. A dislocation is when the ball and socket become dislocated. A separation and when the ligaments tying your socket to your collar bone tear. I sustained a shoulder separation in my Big Bear Crash (do a search for pictures) that ended up in surgery a year later.

Having said that, once you dislocate a shoulder, there is an increased risk of repeat dislocations. Physical Therapy will help strengthen the supporting muscles to prevent this from happening. Go see a physiatrist (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) to get it properly checked out and to get started with a PT. The physiatrist will be able to properly monitor your progress in PT, range of motion, strength, and likelihood of repeat dislocation. Our job as physiatrists is to keep you from needing any sort of surgery if possible.

PM me if you have any questions bro.

Mine was a grade III as well. I waited about a year after doing PT, then decided to have it surgically repaired. I'm now fully back to the gym with no real restrictions 6 months post-op. I highly recommend it. PM me for the details of what method of surgery I chose. There are many ways to repair an AC separation.

My .02 - see a an orthopaedic shoulder specialist. Don't just go to a physio. Even one the team recommends or says is good. I separated mine playing American football in London (don't ask) and now I'm going to have to have surgery to fix it. If I had just seen the right Dr. to begin with, he probably could have done something.

Unfortunately once you've dislocated your shoulder once there's a high risk of it happening again. I did mine initially playing rugby many years ago then agravated it with a bike crash. I had to put up with 2 years of repeated dislocations, happened as often as once a day just prior to having surgery. The joint had become so loose that if I supported my elbow and tensed my chest it would go back in!...

The front edge of the "socket", which isn't really a socket (the shoulder is a very open joint to allow for range of movement) was completely worn away, the rotator cuff was torn and the bursa holding fluid in the joint had burst. I've had a putti-platt and Bankhart repair (google them) done to mine and several years on it's fine...

I don't want to put the frighteners up you, I think this is worse case scenario because I went so long with a damaged joint. I would strongly recommend seeing a proffessional though.

when I pull my arm hard, and relax my shoulder muscles, you can see the shoulder going out of the joint for about 3-4cm.

Can do this with my other shoulder also. I never dislocated my shoulder, so this would be normal? Or should I apply as a circus act.
