Coolant Temp

This is probably a stupid question but I haven't seen it discussed anywhere. We had the first really warm day in MN (80 degrees) and I noticed my FZ was running pretty warm. The coolant was sitting around 185 riding and would creep up to 214 idling before coming back down. Is that where the fan normally kicks in, or is that getting too hot?

Looks pretty normal to me based on other posts on the subject.

That's fine. Sitting still, your fan should come on around 210. I've seen 230 on some really hot days. It should cool down when you're running and pushing air through the radiator.

What if one doesn't have an owners manual?

Anyhoot... referencing the 2007 OM:
Under 103 °F - OK. Go ahead with riding.
104–242 °F - OK. Go ahead with riding.
243–283 °F - Stop the vehicle and allow it to idle until the coolant temperature goes down. If the temperature does not go down, stop the engine.
Above 284 °F - Stop the engine and allow it to cool.

Today OAT at 81°F, 184-200 °F is was what mine displayed and I've seen 210+ °F before so what your seeing is normal. Exactly when your fan kicks in maybe different (the service manual test only for coolant temperature sensor resistance based on a chart).

Forgot to check it out in my owners manual after riding yesterday and now I am out of town for a few days and it was bugging me so I decided to post here, Thanks for all the good info!

Never saw mine go over 220 with the engine running. Hit 235-240 on occasion after shutting the engine off in the parking lot. But as the manual says, "oh ****" temperature isn't until 284.

I've seen 225 on my, hey, it's hot down here on the Gulf Coast. I'm sure I'll see even hotter sitting in traffic up in DC.

The thing that sucks about the 2004-2006 guage is that it only shows coolant temp in bars and not digits.
But those are normal temps. The fan should kick in around 210F

There's an overheat light.

If it's not on, you're OK.
