clutch problems

I usally ride my bike easy 09 fz6 1700 miles still under warrenty. The other day I wound it up to 10000 rpms fifth gear then sixth ended up at about 115. Got home and could smell my clutch burning, I thought it felt like it slipped while running it somewhat fast to me. Any body else have problems like this.

The FZ6 clutch is immersed in oil which is sealed in the crankcase. Are you sure it was the clutch you were smelling, and not something burning off the hot exhaust (road tar, loose asphalt...ect)?

Im not using yama lube I know that If there is to much play in my cable could that cause it? I was on the highway I dont think it was break pads. Could be something on the exhaust does anyone ever run their bikes near redline? Oh yea go Cardinals

Adjust your clutch cable first... Everyone revs their bike to redline once in a while, some do it all the time... This bike is made for it. The engine is based on Yamaha's race bred R6 motors... If your clutch was slipping it would be indicated by your rpms out pacing your acceleration... It would be pretty obvious... I doubt you are having clutch slippage... Curious, is this your first vehicle or experience with a clutch in general?

easy test:

1) start and warm bike (around the block / whatever)
2) don't downshift to 1st as you're slowing to a parking curb/wall/whatever
3) assuming you're in 5th or 6th, rev to 3-4K and (not dump) release the clutch

if the engine doesn't die, but revs and tries to push the bike, yes, there is adjustment to be done.

if the engine does die, and you have xyz amount of freeplay per the manual, consider it a hamfisted day you had when that smell came along.

115mph in top is fairly slow. i'll blame a hamfisted clutching.

wait... so wet clutches don't burn? I know from driving stick that giving it too much gas when comming off the clutch sometimes causes it to burn. this dosen't happen on bikes with wet clutches?

Cars don't have wet clutches, as another member had mentioned it's our oil that keeps it from burning. However, not all bikes have wet clutches. A lot of BMW's have dry clutches and you can smell them.

Ive been riding since I was 17 I am now 49 I use to ride motocross then went to touring bikes this is my first sport bike so Im not sure what to expect out of one I like though, also I would likt to thank each one of you for your input. God Bless you

Cars don't have wet clutches, as another member had mentioned it's our oil that keeps it from burning. However, not all bikes have wet clutches. A lot of BMW's have dry clutches and you can smell them.

I can vouch for smelling a BMW clutch, got to ride a R1200 a couple of days ago through town and all I could smell when stopped at the traffic lights was the clutch!
Other than that it's a nice bike

As stated above, you won't smell the clutch burning. Its pretty much the same set up as most MX bikes, running in engine oil, sealed up in the crankcase.

You shouldn't smell anything just reving to 10,000 RPM's (short of some crap stuck to the underside of the header burning off).

I would do a quick check, get the bike on the center stand and give the rear wheel a spin, there should be no drag from the brake. Do the same with the front (I use a sizzor jack onder the header) and check for excessive drag.

There shouldn't be any and generally get at least one full turn of rotation.

You can also go for a short ride and use just the rear brake and NOT THE FRONT and then stop. The front rotors should not have picked up any heat (do the same for the rear) if it gets hot, somethings dragging/wrong.

If your still smelling something burning, I'd start sniffing around right after the ride and try to pin point down where its coming from. Some thing may have been routed wrong/assembled incorrectly causing the problem..

If you've done any mods, one forum member bought some Chinese knock off levers that were NOT RELEASING the front brake fully and eventually locked up the front wheel. That would definitly cause some burning smell...

You probably finally got the muffler/exhaust hot enough, to start burning off the preservatives.....
