Clutch cable snapped

Hi all,

My 2009 FZ6 has 6700 miles on it and the clutch cable has just snapped. Not completely but almost. The snap occurred close the the lever and it is barely hanging on with only a few strands.

Has anyone else had this happen so early on? Does the FZ6 have a weakness in this area? For a new cable to break like that there must be a point where it is rubbing against something. I'm the first owner of the bike and the only one who has ridden it.

This usually happens if the cable gets bent a little near the end. Sometimes when people change levers or take it apart to lube they have a hard time getting things lined up when putting it back together and force the cable putting a small bend in it. Also a cheaply made lever or a lever where the slot for the cable gets bent will wear the cable.

I just changes out my cable with almost 18k miles on it and it shows no sigh of wear.

My first cable wore out at about 20k miles if I remember right. Don't think I've heard too much about FZ6 cables snapping prematurely.

Good news is the part is cheap, about $40 in the great white north, and fairly easy to replace.

Im on the original cable. I remove it once a year and let motor oil run through it overnight and then re-install it. Works like silk,

No, there haven't been any issues with any cables here. There are 14000 miles on them, and they've been oiled twice tho.
How are you trottle cables holding up?

Thanks for your response all. The clutch lever and cable is original equipment and I never lubed the cable. I can only imagine that maybe the lever and cable was not installed correctly when the bike was assembled. How much of the bike is assembled at the dealer? If the they assembled the lever and cable, then maybe it was done incorrectly??

Wow, so you bought it new and the cable has never been removed this is very unusual. I find it hard to believe that even a bad mechanic could install a cable wrong. I would inspect the area around where it frayed to see if there are any defects like sharp edges or bad machining. If not maybe it was a bad cable or possibly the lack of lube. I suppose if it has been rained on or frequent washing could washed away the lube and caused the premature cable failure.

Whatever it was keep a eye on the new cable and if you see any wear starting just apply a little lube.
