Clicking solanoid

Hi all. I have a single clink on starter button I've put a new battery on changed solanoid (where the click is) and have a new starter on its way if its still the same with new starter installed any ideas please.

I probably would have checked the ground connection at the frame before ordering a new starter. If the solenoid is clicking, it’s usually a sign of a weak battery or poor ground connection.

Thank you Gary I'll check all that while I'm waiting for my starter. I've also been told the battery could need a boost. Cheers buddy

Is the "changed" solenoid new or known to be a good one (not just another)?

You may want to put a meter on both sides of the solenoid and check voltage to the battery,
then check voltage from the the "starter side" when pushing in the starter button..



Bad contacts inside a starter solenoid( Yamaha F150 OB engine).
It would click but with the burnt contacts, couldn't pass
the full current:

The starter may be gunked up and the brushes are not making contact with the commutator. We've seen it happen here before.
While your waiting for the new unit, you could disconnect the battery and pull the starter now and pull the rear plate to inspect.

I've pulled the starter (much swearing was involved) top live fixing point was badly damaged however I put power to it and it works. I'll replace it and hope for the best. I've also cleaned up the earths that go to the frame at the faring. Anyone know if there are any more earths to the frame.

I once hit my thumb with a hammer and I found out my vocal chords worked way better than I thought they could as well my hippocampus where all my curse words are stored..

I cleaned all grounds and fitted new starter motor so I think the clicking solonoid was a combination of bad ground and dodgy starter motor. On reflection both solonoids clicked both battery's about same.

Sorry I'm new to this so my conclusion to clicking solanoid is.
1.. two earth wires mounted on the frame at the front fairing clean all connections.
2 change starter motor.

As I just had my starter quit last weekend, (and have parts coming), here's some pic's
confirming the failure and ultimately the fix.

The initial issue was a click from the under tank relay, (battery is 1 month old and load tested good).

Direct 12 volts to the isolated battery did nothing.

With Cliff's (@Motogiro) input, the starter was pulled.. You do not have to pull the throttle bodies but disconnecting
the clutch cable below and moving some wiring to the side got you in there.

As you can see, the one brush is completely worn down (the black nastiness) .
The set up is neat, brushes are captured, always spring loaded. Re-assembly is also
pretty easy. Re-greased the needle bearing and solid bearing inside the starter as well.

I didn't want a Chinese knock off starter and bought the genuine Yamaha Brush Plate
which should be here tomorrow.

Just an update.

Installed new brushes/plate. Spins over EASILY twice as fast before.

Not a difficult job, but if 12 volts direct to the starter does nothing,
pull it for inspection..

BTW, about 38,000 miles on the clock, and ridden 365..

I had the same issue 2 months ago, each time it would click about 3 times before starting, very seldom on first click.
Bought new battery, still clicked, then a new solenoid beside battery, problem solved for me... I've an 09 s2, my bike has just done over 40k.
I agree with Gary that it could be ground connection,

I'm experiencing this topic right now on my cafe racer. Got the dreaded clicking the day after washing the bike (clue #1). I checked the static voltage (13.6VDC...LiFePH4 battery) and the voltage at crank (or click in this case) which was above 13VDC...which told me that the starter wasn't receiving current. Jumping the starter solenoid I got a normal start - so that rules out the starter itself.

I ordered a new starter solenoid from Amazon and...same result. This tells me that the problem is likely in the wire harness somewhere. So this weekend I will check all of the connectors in the starting chain for corrosion. I'm sure that I had a borderline connection somewhere and washing the bike gave it just enough moisture to create some corrosion. This bike has lived in a dry garage for at least 20 years and the only time it gets wet is during a wash. Time to switch to a dry wash system
