I am about to sync my throttle bodies and I decided to check the air filter. THe bike has about 10k miles and it looks moderately dirty.

In the Yamaha shop manual it describes the process of "cleaning the air filter element." the instructions are not very descriptive, however. Step 3 simply says "Clean: Air filter element."

I was not aware that paper filters like the OEM one could be cleaned. Or is it made of some other material? Could somebody please advise me on whether it can be done, and if so, what I need to do?

thanks

For a paper filter, about all you can do is tap it gently with your hand or on a solid surface to knock out any loose matter. Avoid compressed air since that might puncture the paper if the air stream is too focused.

My general rule is if you can't see light through the filter, it's time to replace it.
