Using google to find a tutorial on changing the chain, I only find one with broken video links. The repair manual seems pretty clear, but it has me taking of the exhaust system and the swing arms. That seems like a lot of extra effort. I am changing the sprockets as well. Is this all necessary just to change the chain and sprockets?

I have not done the swing arm lube job per the maintenance schedule. I am not sure how mission critical it is, but I guess I could do that when it is off. Not looking forward to having to pull the whole exhaust system apart though.

Thanks,
Chris Maness

The FACTORY chain is continuous with NO master link. That's why the swing arm has to come loose to sneak the new chain back in. If you get an aftermarket DID X ring chain (or any other for that fact), they come with a "Press together" masterlink. This is MUCH easier to install (no swing arm removal, no exhaust removal, cut the old chain off, put on the new one) but you do need a tool or bring it to the shop and have them press the ML together.

When I did my chain, I invested in this tool, DID brand, KM501E :

DID KM501E Sport Cutting and Riveting Tool - Street Bike - Motorcycle Superstore

You can get it for about $80 if you look around. Super heavy duty, you cannot over press the master link too tight

Also, as I re-call, another member was able to do the factory chain swap WITHOUT touching the exhaust. It was tight but very do-able... 118 links for the stock chain/sprockets.

Thanks for the tip. I purchased a DRC chain tool when I purchased my kit. VERY easy to use. I wish I would have known how easy it was; I would have done it a long time ago. Also, I ordered new sprockets to go along with my new chain. The originals were not even worn looking. The ebay store from whence I purchased my kit sent me the wrong rear sprocket. It has the same tooth count and diameter, but the center ring that mounts to the wheel is too big.

Thanks for the help,
Chris Maness
