Buying an FZ6-Couple ?s

Hey everyone,
Just joined the forum and looking forward to being a part of the FZ6 community.

So today I sold my Ninja 250. I bought it a few months ago to learn on after taking the MSF course. It was a fun bike but I out grew it pretty quickly.

Now I'm in the market for an FZ6, looking for a 2005-2007 model and my question is, is there anything in particular I should look out for with this model bike other than the usual stuff?

Also, I have seen bikes range from 2K to 20K miles. Is 20K miles a lot for an FZ6. If it has service records, should I be ok with a bike with this many miles.

Depends on the year honestly. I picked up my '06 FZ6 with about 18k miles which is roughly 3600 miles per year, not bad at all. I would be wary of anything more than 25-30k miles with an 06.

I paid $2650 for mine which was pretty much completely stock with a semi-cracked headlight lens. The more you can get with it the better

i would go with 06 and up since they are better and low miles just because sportbikes get ridden hard, i've owned mine since 800 miles after like 12 000 miles the bike doesn't ride like new anymore and power isn't the same and mpg drop , but 20 K miles should be fine if in Excellent condition

To expand on that.. 07 and newer was redesigned. New swingarm, new fairing, new ECU map and better brakes.
Having said that, any year is good really.. everyone here loves their FZ6 (any year) and there are very few issues to speak of. So there's really nothing particular to look for.. same thing you'd look for when buying any used bike.

I too moved to FZ6 from Ninja 250.. you're gonna love it!!

Thanks. Yep, having sold the lil ninja, I'm excited to move up to the FZ6, plus the money I got from the sale is burning a hole in my pocket!

I figured 20K miles was OK if the bike was maintained and comes with service records.

Nothing to be scared of but the first 2 model years 04/05 have 2 recalls one for the tps and one for either the front sprocket nut or washer cant remember wich one right off hand but like i said its nothing to be scared of but ask the owner if they have been taken care of or call a local dealer to find out for sure

Appreciate the info. I inquired about one 2006 and a 2007 model in my price range in the area so I may not have to deal with recall issues. Just waiting on the sellers getting back to me.......

For any members on this forum that have, or have had experience on an FZ1, is this a bike that will get me into trouble in a heartbeat or is it fairly docile unless I really get on it?

I havent rode a fz1 but i have rode bikes equally powerful or moreso and i would not recommend it coming of a 250. You might be fine but ive herd of more people scareing themselves out of riding for a while or alltogether making jumps like that...so stick to something under 100hp or close to it for.your next bike. Imho

My experience on an FZ1 have been really good. The power band just goes on forever. It's more about the rider than the bike. That said, it isn't a beginners bike. If you consider yourself a beginner or a newer rider, I wouldn't do it. The FZ6 is fast as heck. My friend with the FZ1 says the 6 is really quick, the 1 is warp speed. That's accurate.

I put 14k on a 07 FZ6 and now have a FZ1 so here's my take. I am not a new rider so I have to think back to the early days of riding to get where you are.

The FZ6 will get good milage and be cheaper to own (insurance, tires etc) and it really should be your next step in your riding. Buy an 07 and don't worry about miles as long as the appears to be maintained well. Remember they do need a valve adjust at 26K but that is the only big expense with a bike with some miles. These inline 4's can run well past 100,000 mile so 20k is not a big deal.

You can get an FZ1 and it will be as docile as your right wrist will let you but if you try to be Stoner it will bite you fast-real fast. The FZ1 will drink fuel much faster than a 600 too. It is a better bike for someone who knows how to ride but that will take some seat time for you young grasshopper. Be paitent and work your way up to the big power.

You can ride the 600 a few seasons then sell it for what you want to step up to or be quite happy with it. Plenty of riders here are real happy with theirs.

Be safe and don't get in over your head just yet- you need more miles under your arse. Good luck with the bike hunting!.

Most important is to get ALL the good gear. Boots, Pants, Jacket, Real Gloves (not some cheapo's) and a good helmet!

i have an 05, and 32,000 seems like new still. the consumables (tires, chain, pads and unfortunately headstock bearings) otherwise, ride and enjoy.

really, this bike is almost honda boring when it comes to issues (none).

Hey man get what you want. I went from riding my brothers ninjas 250 maybe 100 miles. Then went and bought my fz6 get as big ad hou want just respect the heck out of it. I rode mine for about 2500 miles before I ever went balls out. along with proper gear and maybe taking all your riders courses and you will go far. Those who say you should work your way up I say nay that gets really expensive:rockon:

I too went to FZ1 after 3 season on FZ6. All of the above is spot-on!

So I spoke with the guy selling the FZ1 and it turned out he was selling it for a "friend" who was out of the country but "was given the ok to sign the title over to me". Also the bike was registered non-op status too. Maybe it was legit, but it kinda put me off and I walked.

I'm surprised how tough it is to find an FZ6 in SoCal in my budget ($4K), which was one reason I was open to considering an FZ1. My search continues...

Re wearing gear, I never ride without it. I dropped a few bux on a really good jacket, helmet, boots gloves etc before I bought my 250. Matter of fact, I just picked up a pair of Knee/shin protectors today!

I own a 07 (bought brand new). Go with a 2007+ -- as other pointed out, it has some nice features over the 06 and earlier models. Most notably the fuel system.

Higher miles are fine. I did 6000 miles the first year and then only 600 miles or so for years 2 and 3. Then this season I did 11,000 miles. The service is simple. I change the oil (regular non-synthetic oil) every 2,000 miles. Change the coolant at the start of each season.

It runs just as good today as it did the day I bought it. Regular service is the key.

The FZ6 is a very capable bike and a lot of fun, in my group rides I tend to be one of the faster riders. I have no trouble keeping up with the liter bikes in the corners. On a straight top speed is around 135mph indicated (7,000+ feet elevation is most of Colorado). Probably 145-150 closer to sea level.

Yeah, that sounds like a stolen bike to me. Unless the guy has a notarized power of attorney he can't legally sign for his "friend".

SoCAL is probably different since you guys have a longer (or year round?) riding season but in Colorado at least the motorcycle ads drop off in the off season and pick up again during the on season.

I have had my 2006 FZ6 since it was brand new. I have never felt like it lacked power. The FZ6 is faster than necessary for any kind of street riding and even the best riders cannot use all of the performance offered by this bike on the street. Personally I bought a bike to save a pile of cash on fuel while having a blast doing it! The FZ6 gets 45 - 55 mpg. You are going to loose at least 10mpg average on the FZ1 and that assumes equal riding style.

Don't be afraid to travel across state lines to find one! Everything is overpriced in CA.

So I got the bike today! 07 FZ6 with 20K miles. I'll post pics as soon as I get a chance. Gotta say, the difference between this bike and the lil 250 is night and day. Glad I didn't go with the FZ1, it would've been waaaay to much bike for me.:BLAA:

Congrats!!! Yeah.. FZ6 is an excellent step up from 250. And FIZZER6 is right about mpg, if that sort of thing is important to you :thumbup:
