Anyone up for a tour of Tassie!

OK, am sitting here putting a ride schedule together with estimated departure and arrival times, recommended fuel stops,etc...

1st potential problem i have found...Day 1, we arrive in Devonport in the morning, then ride all day beforewe get to our accomodation....do we really want to beriding all day monday with 5 bikes loaded with heaps of gear???

I love the route, but i would prefer riding without that much gear where possible....

It's 100km's to Launceston from Devonport, so if we were to go there first, drop off our gear, then go back the way we just came, then head to Marrawah, then back to Launceston, it is a 658km journey...8 hours!

So i reckon it might be an idea to see if we can find somewhere to drop our panniers at least in Devonport for the day...and pick it all up on the way back to Launceston...it means we would only have to ride for 100km's wth a full load of gear, rather tha the full 453km's on Humpy's Day 1 map.

Any idea's people???

I'm waiting for an email back regarding the house in Launceston - paying balance etc. When I get that, hopefully tomorrow, I'll ask if we can get access to the house early to drop our gear off. I'll explain that we arrive early on Monday with 5 bikes and all our luggage and would love to be able to drop our gear off. I've checked the stayz website and they're not booked the day before, so that may be ok for us - they won't have cleaners there :)

Yeah, but if we go to Launceston first, then go back to the nice Twisy looking Coastal route that Humpy has laid out for us, that takes in the North West coast, it would add 200km's to our days ride...100km's each from Devonport to Launceston and back to Devonport....and that's just to get to the Coast ride.

The proposed route is already 458km's....nice and manageabe, especially if we have some sightseeing stops.... the ride is 5 hours by itself,without stops.

With an additional detour to Launceston, it would string just the ride out to be bout 8 hours.

Iam not that stressed where we ride...but that Coastal route looks great.

Im happy to alter Day 1 completely , I now have the advantage that my Mum has just returned from Tassie & she tells me there isnt a whole lot to see west of the town of Penguin , which we cover on our way back from Strathan to the boat :thumbup:

Im happy to head straight from the boat to Launceston & start adventuring around the area to look at places like Georgetown & Beaconsfield (where the miners were) for example , take in a tour of the Boags brewery & Mum says Cataract Gorge is a must see..........

Fuel is no real worry to me , people freak out when I tell them the range I get to a tank...... If truck driving taught me nothing else it did teach me to be super economical...

And the V-Star , well I wont know the fuel range of that all loaded up till we leave but im guessing somewhere around 250k ish
 
I have had a real gok at the ride schedules, and have come to the conclusion that Day 1 is not worth changing cause of the gear thing, but i am going to see if i can find somewhere secure to put our gear.

In the middle of putting together a ride schedule..putting in extimate times for rides, where petrol stations are, etc, etc...will send everyone a copy for serious contemplation, once i have a draft copy finished.

I also took the Leo Vince pipes off the bike last night, and put the OEM exhaust back on...i aint giving those PI defect stations a chance!!! Also, for near on 6000km's, i want some peace & quiet...

Have toured with aftermarket pipes before...lots, and it gets noisy out on the open road....droning along...

I also noticed that unbaffled exhaust interrupts with the music i am listening to on my headset...it's like an extra backing track....yuk!

Maybe Day 1 should change, just for the fact that Humpy's mum came back and said there's nothing there past Penguin?

Maybe we could explore around East/Lanceston instead of West of Devonport?
 
Depends what you looking for,for a nice twisty road with a relaxing valley and creek at the end ,try Gunns plains .we used to camp there with a keg and a fishing rod.

Bit of bushwalking with a hell of a view there is Leven canyon.

There is heaps around Ulverstone,will have a think and get back to ya.

That's a great start, thanks for the tips so far!!! Will have a good look tonight, as i am sure Kazza & Humpy and crew will do.
