I'm sure that I'm not the only one here whose only means of transport is a motorcycle. After I passed my test a few years ago I sold my car as I hated driving once I'd ridden a motorcycle and I haven't looked back.
Anyway, the reason for this post is because I'm fed up of ordering bits for my bike and seeing them arrive in GIGANTIC boxes with far more packaging than is needed. They need to think that the people ordering the bits for BIKES may only ride BIKES. Everything I have ordered for my bike so far could fit into a tank bag or small rucksack without the boxes and packaging. Pretty much NOTHING has been able to fit into it though as it arrives from the delivery guys.
I'm one of the many millions of people in the world who WORK during the DAYTIME and therefore packages delivered to my home are always sent on to the depot and I have to collect them. The majority of the time the delivery company won't arrange to send it to my work, but even if they did, I'd still have to take the bits home on my BIKE!
I am now settled in the habit of going to collect my packages with scissors, bungee ropes, a rucksack, my tank bag and often panniers. Then, when the delivery people hand over a massive box, I take everything out, pack it away and leave the empty boxes etc for them to dispose of if I can't fit it folded up on the bike somewhere.
It's not just the distributors and retailers who are guilty of this. I get stuff direct from the manufacturers in massive boxes and even the box inside of these with their logos etc on are just not sized sensibly for someone without a car to transport. My front fork suspension springs were sent to me a box that was about 30cm longer than the springs themselves and which I had to take the springs out of and fold in half to get it into my bag.
Anyway, rant over. I hope I'm not the only one who thinks like this and wishes the manufacturers, distributors and retailers would wise up and think about the convenience of bikers without cars more often!
