86 Fz600 Starter Installation

Hello,

I figured out my starter went bad on my motorcycle.
I bought a new starter, and just need to get it in.

Can anyone tell me , step by step how to take it out?

So far I just unscrewed the 3 screws that seemed the holding most of it on, but I can't seem to get it out.

Can you give some more details or pictures? Most of us don't have that model, so any info helps.

The starter probably is stuck and needs to be wiggled loose. There's an old rubber o-ring on the nose of the starter, and it's likely stiffened up and is fighting you. Penetrating oil like PB Blaster will help free things up.

It looks to me like the started has rotated clockwise from the points it is installed on.... at the bottom right of the close up pic of the starter, it looks like there is a tab of the engine cover that is blocking the 'ear' of the starter..... am I seeing that correctly?

Would it help to rotate the starter counter clockwise far enough to clear that tab?

Looks like if you remove the left side sprocket cover (left outer case) that would get rid of that over lap (the lower right bolt) and allow complete access to the starter.

If there's not a bolt securing the other end of the starter, it should come out after you remove the main starter wire. That wire can be very stiff depending on its gauge......

I tried rotating it, and that didn't work.
So I popped the sprocket cover off , and just pulled it out.
I was just nervous about doing that , because I've never really worked on a motorcycle.
I think it was about 5 bolts.
Put new starter in, and everything worked.

Congrates Ted! I'd clean under theat sprocket cover while there too..

The newer models are a PIA and considerably harder, FI has to come out, etc.
