2006 FZ6 – Dash Stuck Flashing "EP" (Won’t Enter Diag Mode, Works Occasionally)

Hey everyone,
I’ve got a 2006 FZ6 and I’m running into a weird electrical problem. The bike starts and runs fine, but the dash just flashes “EP” nonstop. I can’t even get into diagnostic mode when it’s doing this.
Once in a blue moon, the dash boots normally (tach, fuel, speed, etc. all show up), but most of the time it’s locked on “EP.”

What I’ve checked / noticed so far:
  • Battery is new and bike cranks/starts fine.
  • Charging system has been replaced recently (stator + regulator/rectifier).
  • Sometimes when it does work, everything looks normal until I cycle the key again.
  • Haven’t been able to pull stored codes because it won’t let me into dIAG when flashing EP.
My thoughts so far: maybe a bad dash connector, ground issue, or ECU/dash communication line.

Has anyone run into this before on the FZ6? Any common harness spots to check or tricks to get past the EP lockout?

Appreciate any help — I’d like to sort this before throwing parts at it.

Firstly check the wires and connectors that go from under the tank to the instrument cluster for corroded pins or loose wires.

If those seem ok, trace them back and do the same to the ECU under the seat.

I believe that Graham is correct. EP is a lack of communication between the instrument cluster and the ECU. Check all connections and while you have them separated, clean with contact cleaner. For safe measure coat the outer surface of the inside connector with dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion.

Thanks for the tips. I went through the battery, charging system, fuses, power, and grounds like you guys suggested, and that really helped me narrow things down.
Here’s what I found step by step:
  • Battery: 12.8–12.9 V key-off, holds strong under load.
  • Charging system: New stator & RR, charges steady in the 13.5–14.5 V range.
  • Dash power & ground: Both good — +12 V within 0.3 V of battery, ground near 0 Ω.
  • Continuity: ECU → dash comm line has continuity.
  • Comm line voltage: With dash connected it jumps up to ~11.7 V, but with the dash disconnected it sits at ~4.4 V (correct logic level).

That tells me the ECU is healthy and the dash itself is backfeeding +12 V onto the comm line, which breaks the handshake and keeps the EP flashing.
So at this point it looks like the cluster is the culprit and I’ll either have to repair or replace it. Appreciate everyone’s input — cleaning connectors, checking voltage drops, and chasing grounds definitely pointed me in the right direction.

If there’s anything else I should double-check before I pull the trigger on a replacement or send mine out for repair, let me know.

Rather than replacing the cluster or paying someone to fix it, you can open it up and, if you have the same issue as the person in that link, spray on some WD40 Contact Cleaner and it may sort out the issue.

Just wanted to update for anyone chasing the same issue:
My dash was stuck flashing EP almost all the time. The bike ran fine, but I couldn’t get into diagnostic mode and only once in a while the cluster would boot normally.

What I did:
  • Opened up the instrument cluster.
  • Found signs of moisture/corrosion on the PCB.
  • Carefully cleaned the board with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Re-soldered all the connector joints inside (even if they looked fine).
After that, the dash started working normally again and the EP flashing is gone.

Cause:
Over time, vibration + moisture caused micro-cracks in the solder joints and some contamination on the board. Cleaning + reflowing the joints restored the ECU ↔ dash communication.

Hopefully this saves someone else a headache — you don’t always need a new dash or ECU, just some careful DIY electronics work.

I'm curious to know how you went about opening up the case, as well as what method you used to put it back together. Does it look like it's been sawed in half or anything?

Thank you StreetGrim, I've just had the same issue. I changed the clutch cable and the display lcd and backlight stopped working, Imobiliser, indicators, engine, oil, neutral leds still working. I assumed that I'd damaged a part of the loom removing the old clutch cable and repeatedly traced every wire (contnuity and voltage) and checked every connector plocket trying to find the problem. I got the display working but it would only show flashing EP, impossible to enter diagnostic mode. It appears that it just picked that moment to fail, it felt like an extreme lesson in correlation is not causality! I'm so glad that you posted this, I would never have guessed that aged solder connections would suddenly exhibit thus. Sure enough after I'd cleaned, re-soldered and cleaned again every single component on both sides of the PCB it booted and works correctly again. I tried connecting it repeatedly throughout the process to find where on the board the issue was... EP flashing every time untill every connection was re-soldered or re-flowed and only then did it suddenly work perfectly. I sealed the display casing back together with a plumbing silicone I use elsewhere (Fernox LSX).
