The answer would be: Mileage and Torque, - in general diesel will output a much higher Torque than petrol. Also they use the fuel better and therefore (in general) gives you higher mileage.

That marine bike is a minimum 5 years old. I remember hearing about it in auto shop in high school.

So what kept Kawa from producing a civil edition...

Could be interesting for commuting considering mileage, higher torque and diesel being cheaper than petrol. On the other hand it would be heavier as it probably needs a turbo.

Look at the videos at dieselmotorcycles.eu. The sounds really awful, like a delivery van It looks rather quick though, i'd sure like to test ride it...

the KLR (D) was designed specificly for the army because everyother vehicle used while on tour is deisel powered ,at the moment petrol needs to be shipped specificly to remote locations just to keep the bikes running,i read that the savings on logistics alone will be into the $millions

It was my understanding that the bike will run on more than diesel. That is its main purpose, but it will run on about anything that burns.

One of the mags I get had an article a couple months ago about a motorcycle with a Wankel engine in it. The thing wasn't much bigger than a softball (the motor). That would have some serious weight advantages, along with a pretty cool sound too.

RAWK, thank you Fz6Sa! I've read a lot about the Wankel over the years, but could never quite picture how it worked, until I see that animation from Wiki. I guess if a picture is worth a thousand words, an animation is worth 3.14 x 10^8 words.

Now, if they'd just do an animation on how a hologram works, I could be fulfilled.

I rode one of the Rokons back in '71, was a pretty cool but weird ride. Climbs like a mountain goat, slow motion wheelies, float it across streams. I remember the brakes not being that good, but maybe it's been improved since then(threw me on my ass on a steep downgrade).
