The United States is HUGE! The closest SWAT is probably St Louis which is 30+/- miles away. Our nearest police station is in the town that is 5 miles from my house. Consider Montana, though. If someone attacks your house there, it may be 100 miles to the nearest police station.

Im not getting into the gun debate been there and done that on other threads. Here in oz we also have the law if you take things into your own hands you will be punished, we pretty much can use the same force as they are using, if they are swinging a bat we can belt them with a bat we cant use a bat against someone unarmed. Here also if a robber hurts themselves whilst breaking into your house they can claim insuranse against your house policey, hows that for a joke.
