I have always just used the hash marks and never had an issue of instability or uneven tire wear. That's what they're there for.

Since there's no clear leak, my first suggestion would be to pressure test the system to try to find the leak. You can add a UV dye then look for it with a UV light.
It has to be going somewhere. Have you had someone ride behind you and specifically look for smoke?

I second Motogiro suggestion.
- Check that the cable is routed properly (could have been installed wrong by previous owner).
- Lube the cable
- adjust the throttle free play. This helps a lot. Too much free play contributes to a 'jerky' feel when getting back on the throttle.

Then it should be either bad fuel or a bad fuel pump. When you turn the key on before hitting the starter, you should hear the electric fuel pump running.

What do you mean by can't get it to catch? Does the engine turn over? Gotta have the basics. Fuel? Spark? First thing I'd do is put fresh fuel in it. You can also remove the air box and spray some starter fluid directly into the intake while cranking to see if she'll fire.

The housing doesn't come with any wiring? Strange. Just match the gauge and replace the wires. Nothing special, it's just wire.

To each their own, I guess. Just not for me.
Not sure why I'd want a key that big that no longer can go in a Keychain.

The only way I would allow a test ride would be if I had cash in hand for the full amount. No exceptions. You broke it/crashed it/dropped it, you bought it.

I like them, I just can't believe how expensive they are. It's on my list, just can't justify it now. I love the DRL feature and the combined brake/run/turn for the rear.
