Strange Noise!

ok i fired up my fz to get ready for a ride and notice a knocking noise, i belive its coming from the trans, but hard to tell. if you rev the engine a lil the knocking gets faster, and if you put it in gear and let out the clutch putting a load on the engine the noise stops.....any ideas?

and i just put my TB exhaust on yesterday so now i cant even enjoy them

Maybe try putting premium fuel in it. Might be engine ping

ok so i busted out the stethiscope and located the origin of the noise and it is def. coming from the clutch, bike is under warranty until Aug 16 so im happy it decided to do i tnow i guess, its going to yamaha tuesday.

talked to the yamaha shop today, they pulled the clutch cover and found a broke clutch plate replaced that and still makes the knocking noise. they said it looked as if the clutch has been replaced before, and if so its possible that when the last clutch burned up the ppl who did the work may not have cleaned the oil sump causing a lack of oil flow, and causing a rod knock . now that was just a possibility, they do not know what is wrong as of now. i will keep u posted as i get more info.

Gulp. It's stories like these that make me think twice about cancelling my extended service warranty (kicks in Nov, 2008). It's a damn good thing that your warranty is/was still in effect, huh? Are you saying that the shop now suspects a BENT rod? OMG.

OUCH! I'd make sure that it gets a real good going through while the shop has it. Make sure that they do a check ride on it, then do one yourself, GRUMPY

yeah i am thinking of buying the extended warranty,

no they dont suspect a bent rod but rather the bottom end rod bearings may be shot.

i know the service manager personally, he is a good friend of the family and very good at what he does, he has rebuilt many of my old race bikes and they were amazing, so im sure whatever happens the bike will come back better than new.

so i talked to the yamaha shop again, they removed the valve cover thinking that maybe the knock was coming from the top end, answer NO. so now they are dumb founded by the noise. they have never encountered this problem on any other bikes. they have had the bike for a week and still no solution, so im going to give them till wed. then im going to pick it up and ride it, if it breaks it breaks.

Sorry to hear your problems man. I hope it all works out for you. You are at least lucky enough that you know the manager personaly thats a big plus on your end.

a little off topic, but isnt running only premium in a bike that will take 87 octane a bad thing? as in, the fuel doesnt burn completely and leaves carbon deposits?

In a word, no. The only (and minimal) damage that will occur using premium is the extra money out of your wallet. No engine damage will occur, period. In fact running premium all of the time can have advantages, such as better/more cleaning additives. Going to a higher octane than recommended will not do anything other than keep your valves cleaner. Higher octane just means that the fuel is going to be more resistant to preignition. Since our bikes have a 12.2:1 compression ratio, I will stick with premium.

Another Update: talked to the shop again today, and they have started tearing down the motor, like i said before they have been through the top end and clutch, so now they are tearing the whole engine down there were in the process today around 4, and said that they will know what is wrong with it by tomorrow afternoon. Im betting the tranny is shot :spank:, anybody else want to get in on it, could be fun....Guess the Problem. :thumbup:

you should be mixing in a full tank of 87 every now and then

91 and higher octane gas does not burn completely unless the engine was designed for it - like most v-twins. this means that wasnt isnt fully burned is left as a carbon deposit

87 burns hotter and can actually help to keep your engine clean. the MoM for the fz6 states 87 is more t han adequate

Well the verdict is in! The yamaha shop called about an hour ago, and they found the cause of my knock. A bad gear, bent shift fork, and busted clutch basket. the shop called yamaha and Yamaha said it was a freek thing, and was a first as far as they knew.

That was the bad news, Now the good news. All the parts have been ordered, and will be here within 5 days. so hopefully i will have my baby back by next Sat. and its all FREE i love warranties!!

haha, dang, i just missed the guessing...i was gonna say you dropped a bolt in the exhaust down to the headers when putting on your two bros....now THAT woulda been funny hehe...sounds like something i'd do lol

Well the bike is still in a million pieces as of yesterday, they are waiting on one part, which was being shipped from some way off warehouse. supposed to be here tues. bike should be back in my hands by wed. Hopefully but :don'tknow:

they decided to go ahead and replace first and second gear, along with the shift fork, clutch basket, and clutch assembly.

and i bought a two year extended warranty, i think $380 dollars for two years was a good investment.
