Has anyone ever made a 2000 mile ride? Im planning on riding from St. Louis to San Diego in early august. My friend is riding in his cage with me, and wed like to make it in 2 days. Gonna be a S**T load of riding, but it will save me about 300 big ones on getting a trailor to haul it.

Think its possible to make it in 2 days riding non stop cep for a few hours of rest in the night?
 
I am all for you man. Heres the thing. You are asking to do two iron butts back to back over two days. If you do 1500 in 36 thats a bunburner and hella hard to do. The iron butt is 1k in 24 and hella hard to do.

If I were to do that I would have to prepare by riding 400 one day, then try for 500 later, then try for more and more. I would'nt wanna just set off on it and go for it.

If you do it, make sure you send off for your iron butt pack. Complete it, and you get a cool pin, and certificate.
 
As close as I can figure and this is from downtown St Louis to Old Town San Diego, you'll be going about 1,830 miles. This is 915 miles in each of the 2 days. If you average 60mph and trust me, this looks much easier than it is, you will be in the saddle 15.5 hours per day. This means 31 hours out of the 48 you'll be riding and the time frame you have set will push your riding skills to the limit if you are not used to long hard riding. When I rode the Sporty from Riverside, California to Bowling Green Kentucky I went 2,368 miles in 3 days and this was an average of only 39mph. I'm used to hard riding and it was still fatiguing.

Stops every 100 miles is good but don't just stop and shoot the crap, rest and pump yourself full of water or something like Gatorade. Trust me, you will need it. It would also be wise to get in the saddle for a few 500 mile day runs before you leave so you can become accustom to the longer runs. Do not push it, as riders can and do fall asleep at the bars. Do not hesitate to pull over if you feel tired at all as fatigue will cause poor judgment and that is the last thing a rider needs. Set a pace for yourself and stick with it.

Thanks for the support! Im going on a 400 mile ride or so with some guys off the forum on Sunday. Im going to go for a ride like that every weekend before I head out.

This would be a very good idea.
 
50 miles the seat starts to get uncomfortable, 100 miles and it hurts, 200 miles it still hurts the next day, and 500 miles? Dude, you're insane.

This is a big task.

The Iron Butts do a 1500 miles in 36 hour run but it is tough.

I would spread 2000miles over 3 days.

It may save you 300 bucks but don`t risk your life for that amount, it just is not worth it.

Yup, that third day will make a huge difference.
 
Your 1888.0 mile (3038.4 km) road trip will cost you about 160.68 in fuel, based on an efficiency of 47.00 miles per gallon and a total fuel volume of 40.17 gallons (your fuel cost per mile will be about 0.09). I did this with an average gal of gas costing 4 dollars which may be on the low side.

I got this from a calculator. You said a trailer cost 300. So you saving 140 dollars riding. According to google map it says to take 40 almost the whole way there are parts of this drive that will be extremely boring and very hot depending on the time of year. IE boring: Texas panhandle, hot: Mohave desert



Personally I would trailer.

Wow, that's a hell of a ride you're planning! I did 1600 miles round-trip back in April... 800 miles one day up to TN, then the 800 miles back over two days.

My ride up went really well despite the pre-dawn near-freezing cold. I didn't get really sore until the last hour or two of the ride. The ride back was torture. Had to stop halfway back at a motel for the night... couldn't take any more.

You might try to be prepared in case you find you can't handle that extreme distance over two days. Good luck to you! And when is it that you are leaving?

You're right about I40 and also why this rider would take 70 all the way across to I15 in Utah and then southwest through sin city and on to San Diego. That run over the rockies will be awesome. The geologic formations and colors in Utah are spectacular as is the Valley of Fire just over the border with Nevada. The other thing you avoid is the truckers until you get to I15 and even there it isn't near as bad as I40.

I would figure the bike to get between 50 and 55mpg no problem on the run. if you hold it to a cruise around 65-75mph (in general, the speed limit). You can run at night when you get out west and this will beat the pounding heat.
 
I just finished with a 1750 mile ride in 3 days, and that was way more than I cared to do.
 
Man that is one long ass ride. I've done Denver to LA in two days and my butt was kicked, and that was on an 1100 not a buzzy 600.

I'd HIGHLY recommend a fake sheep skin seat cover (looks terrible but you butt with thank you), a throttle lock, ear plugs, Gold Bond power for your butt, a Camelback and supportive boots: eg: boots with a steel shank to support your feet.

And you have the right idea, stop often, rest and drink a lot of water.
 
Im planning on leaving around August 6th. My friend is driving his cavalier so if I run out of gas, we can take that to get it. If I start to get overheated, we can stop and I can sit in the AC.

A trailor costs around 300 give or take, and he doesnt have a hitch on his cage, so thats another 150.

When I get out on the road and find out after hours of riding that I dont wanna risk anything, I will stretch it to 3 days.

Anyone, know where I can get a throttle lock? Or how to rig one up?
