Overhauling brake calipers

I lurk around here a lot and find it to be very helpful. I've used many of the tutorials on my '07 FZ6 with zero problems. Thanks!

I am now tackling the front brake caliper rebuild discussed in this thread and I do have one question. In the quoted videos, the guy notes that the seals should only be inserted one way because they do not have a constant profile. Haven't heard anybody discuss this with the FZ6 seals.

Anyway, I measured both sides of the seal with a set of digital calipers, and I can't tell any difference. However, to test it out another way I inserted the old seal back in the slot, upside down. There's a noticeable difference in how difficult it is to get it back out when I insert it that way (I did it a couple of times just to make sure I wasn't simply stretching it out when I removed it).

Maybe this is all in my head, and our seals are, in fact, constant profile. Does anybody know?

Hmmmm. Interesting issue. I will be tackling this in the coming month or so. I have successfully rebuilt calipers with new seals on a 1982 CB900C and didn't notice any issues. I also rebuilt a rear caliper on a 2004 GSX750F Kat but reused the seals. Same. No issues. And didn't take note of which way any of the seals came out. Other than size, and I could be wrong, but I can't see why the seal would be different. Inserted in one way or flipped 180 degrees. They have to allow the piston to move in and out. Anyway, I'll watch this thread accordingly.

I rebuilt my both the FZ and my old FJR (same caliper) and the seals did NOT have ANY taper.


There has been ONE post here , on the forum, the taper was a 45 degree cut, maybe 1/4 the way down into the seal (NOT ALL THE WAY).

It is NOT addressed in either Yamaha manual


As posted above its got to seal.

It may make it easier putting in the piston with the taper out (should you get a tappered seal) however, I think I would put the square end closest to the pads. The reason being, when you replace your brake pads, should there be any gunk, (should be cleaned before anyway) the sharper edge of the seal, vs the tappered edge, would (I believe...) tend to push that crap off and not help force it into the tappered seal/piston.. You'd also have a little more(25%) more lubricating brake fluid behind the piston edges, making movement slightly easier for the piston. Just an opinion....

Thanks all for the replies. I managed to convince myself that they are not tapered at all. Got everything put back together (now getting about 4 spins, compared to 1 before overhaul). Will post back after I get a chance to take her for a ride.
