Hid Bulbs

A friend has given these away since he didn't use them. Maybe someone is wondering what these are like so I thought I should post some pics. I think (actually he thinks) they are the ones found here:

The installation is easy, so I tried it. You can see the difference in the pics. On the right it's the new H4 bulb, on the left is the factory one.

If you look at the last pic (taken at max of 20 metres away) you'll see that the light during the day the HID is bearly visible. And my question is: Is this due to the low quality of the product or are all the HID bulbs like that during the day? Didn't have the chance to check them during the night yet. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Unless the kit you got came with a ballast and such, that's not a HID kit. They're just blue-coated light bulbs.

seems how they are just bulbs u will prob not have as good illumination , and they will most likly burn out faster and they could ruin your wiring harness..... and could melt the headlight bucket.....
 
HID vs Halogen Bulbs

Hey Guys,
Let's help differentiate how HID's bulb work versus standard Halogen bulbs. A halogen bulb has a coil inside of it that when electricity is passed through that coil, the coil heats up and emits light. The problem is that after several cycles of heating-cooling (turning it on and off), that coil weakens and eventually breaks = burnt out light bulb.

HID's on the other hand have no coil in them. Instead they have a gap between two electrodes that electricity actually arches (jumps) across, which in turn excites the gas inside the light bulb (picture diagram included). This excited gas then releases energy = emitted light. The type of gas they use in the bulb is what determines the color/temperature of the bulb (4300k, 6000k, 8000k, etc.). The down side to HID's is that they require extra parts to make them work, including a ballast and igniter (most high quality kits have the igniter inside the ballast). The plus side to HID is that a good quality kit will outlast the life of the vehicle. Good kits will use name brand products like Phillips.

So, is the fact that the Xenon bulb not visible during daylight normal for a xenon light or are my bulbs of bad quality? (see last picture at initial post)

No, not necessarily. What you need to be aware of is that you are merely using a normal halogen bulb that is just coated with a blue film on the outside to create that blue-white color. This means that less of the light will actually leave the lightbulb than before, thus giving you less usable light on the road. An HID setup would give you this same color, but with significantly more lightout.
