Tomtom is reported to be bringing out it's new rider 5 satnav (for bikes). here's a translation of a story I found on facebook:

More specs known about the TomTom Rider 5
At the end of February the new TomTom 5 will be introduced. At the motorcycle fair in Utrecht. On a hidden Web page of Louis Germany we found the specs of the new Rider.

The TomTom 5 has three route preferences: fastest route, most beautiful route (with most curves) and ... homemade routes. The Rider 5 is delivered with the Windows program Tyre. It allows you to create routes on a pc (windows) and upload it to the TomTom 5. Riden routes you can share with other (TomTom) riders.

You get to see the route on a wide display (130 x 1010 x 53 mm) with high contrast.

For map updates (45 countries, 4 updates per year) you are guaranteed a life long update by Free Lifetime Maps. Map Share is also free, this shows daily traffic information about traffic jams, road closures etc from fellow TomTom users processed in the routing.

What do you think? Is TomTom 5 a possible competitor to the Garmin Zumo?

I will definately be taking a look at the Motorbeurs later this month.

i don't know any info about this, but I've not worked there for quite a while now. Looks like it might still be running the older nav 3.

Greg I had hoped you might have some insider information for us , and what are the modern tomtoms running these days (as opposed to the nav 3's).

Looks interesting. Unfortunately, I've promised myself not buy TomTom GPS units again. When I got my first motorcycle, I "invested" into Rider 2, which served me well, except for when the bike got stolen (and the mount went with it), I could not purchase the same power-enabled mount separately (there were plenty of aftermarket mounts, but none of them were power-carrying). TomTom Rep basically told me that they dont sell them. I do not remember anymore whether this was limited to the US only, but, after paying almost half-a-grand for a do-it-all GPS, i would expect better availability or replacement parts from one of the leading GPS manufacturers. I basically ended up giving it to my dad to use in his car (with a car mount). Anyways, jsut my 2c, I hope others wont run into the same issues.

Good tip, I would be interested to know if they supply seperate cable/mount. I really think the life time updates make this model interesting though.

I think he's talking about the cradle, with power cables. I did see a seperate battery, which would double the range (when charged), but I'm not sure how difficult it is to change on the rider, on the garmin zumo 550 it's quite simple (if you have the correct allen key).

It can now directly load GPX (universal) files (previously it could only handle it's own ITN Files), which it converts to a route (in the GPS and not only with the software). The screen is larger, which means a new mount (I'm curious if you can buy these seperate). It can create its own tracks (max 10,000).
The memory is doubled to 4Gb's, but it is internal memory and not with an SD card (like garmin).

One of the GPS experts is presently testing it.

I'd be curious how the screen looks in the sun, does it bleech out like most garmins?

The only Garmin I've seen that doesn't bleech out is their marine unit. I've e-mailed them re changing their screen to that style, of course to no avail...

I must admit Scott I have always found that my Zumo 550 has a good screen, which is easy to read, even in the sun :thumbup:.

Well they'll be releasing more info at the Dutch Motorbike show (motobeurs) which is next weekend.

Cloggy got it right - I meant the so called "shoe" - it has four or five pin contacts and allows charging on the road (on the car mount it allows loudspeaker). There were plenty of mounts out there, but none of them had that "shoe". Additionally, because I would usually put the unit onto the bike before turning the bike on, the unit would fire up with ignition. Not sure if it was my unit, but I was NEVER able to fire up that GPS unit by pressing the power button, so I always relied on power delivered through the mount to fire it up (not a battery issue - the unit would stay on after the bike was turned off for a very long time - i would actually power it off using the power button). At the time I read that a lot of users had issue with that power button. I hope they addressed this issue too.

Had a look at the tomtom stand at the motorbeurs today.
I forgot to ask about if the new mount can be bought seperately :spank:
The new mount is slightly different to the other mounts, partly due to size and also they use a few more pins on the mount (they said for stability).

Had a short chat with Jan Boersma,

the guy who wrote the program Tyre, which is now used together with the new tomtom rider. You can use a route with up to 100 waypoints, and the tomtom can also create tracks (in a similar way to the zumo) (with 10,000 waypoints).

In short I'm pretty convinced that the tomtom is now a worthy rival to the Garmin Zumo :thumbup:

Might need to toss in a liver also. I use a plain "cager" gps on the bike, and didn't realize how expensive the cool ones were.. Yikes

Hello all. I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I have just recieved my TomTom rider 5. I have not really had any time to play with it yet. I am going touring and in the process of getting my kit together. I am going to be installing oxford heated grips and the tomtom charger. I would also like another cable to charge from via USB. I have heard that its best to wire them through the lights rather then the battery? Could some kind soul please point me to the thread were no doubt that has already been discussed would be grand. Also will post a report on the new Tomtom 5 when I get it all set up.:Flash:

I have mine wired positive to the right, front running light, the negative, just to a ground (I have a powerblock and grounded to that).

Wired this way, the GPS powers up with the ignition (switch turned on) and turns off with the key (unless you hit the cancel-go to internal battery option(Garmin 2350).
