Rode in this morning and it was 39F/4C here in DE/PA. It was not pleasant. I'm not geared up like I should be... just extra layers under my summer gear. I think a decent pair of gloves should get me another month but I seriously have to consider completely winterizing me, or the bike.

If I do drop some serious coin on a jacket, pants, gloves and perhaps boots, then I'm financially forced to ride through the winter and I just don't know if that's going to be enjoyable. :don'tknow:
 
Yep, the cold weather is rolling in. I recently fitted heated grips and acerbis dual road hand guards. I already got my alpinestarts dry star gear from head to toe and will an all in one waterproof suit i can jump in, i think i am prepared this year.

If you can stay warm and dry you will enjoy it. easier said then done
 
Heated gear is the only option IMO. There's no way I could just park my bike for months at a time, I'd miss it too much. But it's easier to ride year round here in the south.
 
My boss recommended latex gloves under riding gloves. Keeps the fingers toasty without sacrificing grip but really, this is just delaying the inevitable... go big or go in the garage.
 
I only have heated gloves and have not used them in 2 years! This year tho...they will get used. I have an adventure type jacket for winter and thermals that work pretty well. Like Chevy said, I would miss riding too much to put the bike in sleepy mode. I'll ride unless there is snow on the ground.

I've never tried that, but I've used them for work and my hands sweat in them.

I just hooked up my First Gear heated gloves:thumbup:
I've had them for almost 2 years and never used them, they feel warm:rockon:

Yup, heated gear is great! 38F here this morning, but it was 80F in my gear :)

I have firstgear pant/jacket liners and gloves, a 2 zone heat controller that let's me regulate how warm it gets in sections. I ride all year and love everyday of it!
 
My winter riding always stops at 32 degrees....the possibility of ice always stops me, me and my bike are worth more then the extra $$ for the gas in the Mustang.
 
I finally made the plunge this year and bought some heated gear. It will be arriving today!! A good windproof balaclava is also needed to keep the cold wind off your neck! I'm excited to extend my riding season, but will probably store the bike once the streets turn white from the salt after the first snow. I don't want my bike to corrode away from the insane amounts of salt they put down. That 5hit destroys everything!
 
Yeah, 39 when I left the house this morning. No heated gear here either, but I can do 30-40 minutes with what I've got.

Cheap way to gain a lot of warmth: if you don't already have rain gear, get it! It does a great job of keeping you warm by blocking out all the wind. Wear the regular layers you use now for coldest days and add rain gear over it.. you'll be surprised how well that works. Complete suit can be had at Cyclegear for ~$45.

Good gloves are a must though, if you don't have heated grips. I think mine were only about $50 and they hold up pretty good. I do put my right hand on the motor at stops to prevent it from getting too cold, when it's safe to do so.

Also important to cover your neck and this too doesn't cost much: neck gaiter can be had for $15-20.

I too stay away from riding when the temps dip below freezing.. mainly because of possible ice.
 
I've been thinking about this a lot the last few days, too. The leather jacket I've got is great, but I'll be getting a wool sweater & scarf for it, too (and other layers).

Could anyone recommend some decent heavy duty gloves/liners, heated socks, balaclava/gator to wear? I figure I'll give some winter work commutes a whirl...more fun than winterizing the bike, I'm hoping :D

No comment on socks.. my waterproof Sidis are good enough in the Winter with regular socks.

Hell if we get ice in GA the entire state shuts down so ill just take the day off with the rest of the state :BLAA:
 
Just move here to Cali, pay insane real estate prices and $6.00 per gallon gas and you can ride year round...problem solved! :BLAA:

Just kidding, invest in a little cold weather gear and enjoy where you live. :thumbup:

that is soooo true! i think 2 years ago all of Atlanta shut down for 5 days....I was rolling laughing at these people driving in the snow...
 
I suck now. I used to ride to -5 as my low end. Now I ride to +5. Can't do it anymore. Lol








(and yes, CELCIUS. Lol the only civilized way of measuring temperature....)
