Hi guys and gals,
I know there are a bunch of threads on the subject of converting a FZ6 headlight to naked headlight setup, but I have been looking for days on the Net and simply cannot find where to buy a conversion kit.

I just bought my first bike (with damaged fairing) and I'm a total newbie at modifying stuff, so looking at ordering different parts and make custom pieces is just too daunting. I know that a user here (dsc_usc) sells a kit and he has had good feedback but I didn't get an answer by email. Maybe I am a bit too late at this, seems like the mods were all the craze a couple of years ago. Also tried another seller (vds002) but no answer either. That sort of kit would have been perfect for me. All the pieces are in there so I know I can take everything apart and start the conversion knowing that I have all the pieces to finish. And the price is within budget too.

I tried eBay etc but no luck. Most of the links from other discussions are broken as well. What's left are sources to buy individual pieces.

If anyone here knows where I can grab one of those kit, I would be very thankful.

Enjoy your ride everybody and be safe. :Flash:

I don't know, I made mine out of sheet aluminum and 2 Hella offroad lights. That being said I did a quick search on Google for Street Fighter Headlight conversion and got back 4 pages under shopping.

I guess it's easy if ya know what you're doing. I really don't know much and don't want to break something. Looking for a fit, screw, plug and ride solution. I saw some conversion kits for other bikes that some other ppl have used in other discussions, but they all needed some sort of custom job - wiring, painting, metal thingy. I ain't there yet.

If I can't find any, I will just keep my bike with the damaged fairings until I figure out a good way of doing it / or winter.

I did my conversion this winter (only a few months ago) from Dev_USC's VS-2 kit. So its not like he's been gone for years. Give him some time to get back to you...might be on vacation or something. He's really the only one with that official Yamaha kit though. Although there are other, more "involved/custom" projects as well.

Just noticed this right after my post....might just be a typo but his user name is dev_usc. Might have sent it to the wrong name.... :banghead:

Thanks for your reply Iron_Cross. yes that's the user I contacted (without the typo  ). Glad to hear that he is still around. I will stop searching the net for now and wait for an answer.

I like your bike hehe. That's the look I want to get.

His kit will be perfect. Quite eager to do this change :D

I'm in the same boat. Just bought a wrecked 04' fz6 and found this forum. I also would like to get this kit. I've found some of the parts on Ebay, but its pretty hard to be sure thats its the same. Bike is for my son who just graduated (he like the single headlight kit), otherwise I'd be going with twin Dominators and a buell flyscreen. Let me know if you come across anything and I'll do the same. I've sent dev_usc a Pm also and will ""patiently"" for a time.

Vishnu (dev_usc) is certainly still around and supplying the conversion kits. Just a week or so ago he sent me some plugs to seamlessly wire in the running light on the VS-02 headlight.

Give him some time and I am sure he will respond to your PM.

Vishnu (dev_usc) is definitely around and is very good at responding to PM's. I just bought my kit from him not too long ago and installed it a few weeks ago.

Did you guys have to do some wiring to make the headlight works? Cause it goes from dual headlight to a single one?

The bike I bought also came with a HID setup, with a dual balast and everything. No projector, just H4 and H7 bulbs I think. I wonder if I will be able to use it, at least one of them. For this I understand the dev_usc's kit will not include anything on this. Should I ask dev_usc to include some additional parts to make it work? I have been reading about a circuit relay

Did so much reading and learning about bikes lately, unreal

There is a minimal amount of wiring done on the stock harnesses to convert from two-to-one headlight. Basically the low beam wire from the H7 bulb (low beam only) is pulled out of the plug and put into the H4 harness (technically the H4 bulb is low and high, but Yamaha doesn't wire it this way - therefore you only have a high beam with stock wiring). The ground wire coming from the stock H7 bulb will be disconnected and wired to the small running light located on the naked kit. Then you just have to wire one of the running lights from the turn signals to the small running light.

As for the relay - there are a couple different options out there. Motogiro makes and sells one that I believe is easier to install. This relay shuts off the low beam when the high beam is turned on. It allows you to install a higher power bulb without premature failure by overheating (or dual low beams if you have the stock headlight). Or BD43 sells a wire harness which actually goes to the stock wire harness under the battery and runs to the H4 bulb to give you the same thing - dual low beams and the low beam shuts off when the high is turned on. This is the route that I took a couple months ago, and now it works great on my naked kit.

As for the HID kit - I know nothing about them haha. Motogiro (Cliff) is a HUGE help when it comes to electrical questions. He helped me a ton with new signals, wiring the naked kit, etc.

If you want to keep the HID bulbs, just do as said before: make the correct connections into the stock H4 connector (plugging in the H7 pos. lead), to get a fully functional H4 connection.
After this, disconnect one of the 2 ballasts (+ starter, wiring and HID bulb), and remove it from the bike.
The remaining ballast, should be wired to: stock H4 connector, battery (positive and negative), wiring to bulb (using the H4 adapter plate).

That's all you have to do

Grtz,

p.s. You could also go a step further and get a HID projector fitted into your VS-01 or VS-02 headlight...(You might even ask Vishnu if he could/would do it for you.... You might never know :)

Hey thanks so much for your help. For a beginner (just learned to ride a bike and just bought a bike), this forum and its members are a life-saver. I would have never thought of doing modifications alone.

I understand what needs to be done about the wiring. I will try to keep the HID with one ballast (H4 bulb). From some more reading, I think I will need a relay to prevent the low and high beam to be on at the same time so that the HID bulb does not overhead and goes boom.

Now I just need Vishnu to come back and get started on the modifications. Important ppl should not be allowed to take vacation :D

I made a "little" error...
In order to keep the full function in the VS headlight kit, you would need a bi-xenon HID kit. If you use your current kit, you'll only have a low beam.
If you install a bi-xenon kit, you'll have both low and high beam (this can be achieved by different methods: tilting the HID bulb, lighting up a secondary light chamber (HID or halogen)). Note: the HID high beam function isn't THAT spectacular, though it is a fair bit better than the stock halogen bulb....

The best way to go HID, is to use some HID projectors.
If you want to go this route, just let me know and I'll guide you through the process :) It really isn't that hard to do :)

Haha, I will take it easy for the time being :) maybe I'll do the projector later, or sooner than later. But thanks for the offer!!!

I just checked on my bike and I have two bulbs H4 like in the pics and H7. I think the H7 will be useless once I convert. The H4 has a dual filament, one HID and one halogen from what I gathered on the Internet. I also saw that it seems to have all the cables to use both bulbs. I will know for sure when I take it apart.

If I am to use what I have right now and not buy new stuff, I am thinking that I can have low beam on HID and high beam on halogen. That's not ideal but quite alright since high-beam is not used often.

However, I don't know if the low beam (HID) needs to be deactivated when the high beam (Halogen) is ON. Will there be a heat issue with both on? So if I put a relay to cut off the low beam, I will loose HID on high beam.

Just thought of something: Given that in India, people drives on the left-side of the road - Isn't the headlight that comes with the kit going to blind the drivers in countries where people drives on the right-side?

Cause the headlights are made so as to focus the light away from incoming traffic, right?

you are correct about the driving direction but the light is designed to focus the light in the center... not sure if yamaha was lazy to design the light or maype its not possible..

dev is still around,i just put his vs 2 kit on last week and it was worth every cent, only takes couple of hours to do really.
longest part is taking off the old fairing,
i had very good communication with vishnu, just give him some time.all the best with the conversion mate
