Parking in heavy wind.

In high wind conditions which stand is better to prevent the bike from blowing over? Centerstand or sidestand. I'm not sure if it has happened to anyone (it hasn't to me), but whenever a strong storm comes through and the bike is outside I always worry about this. I'm going to be parking it outside overnight a lot more now that I'm doing 24 hour shifts so it won't be safe in my garage.

side stand is probably more secure

park it close to a wall so that it is out of the wind, leave it in gear too so it can't roll, and with the wheel turned to the left so it forms a big tripod with the side stand.

In gear, and push forward until the engine compression stops it, then sidestand, wheel to the left/locked.

Should survive anything short of a cat 2 hurricane.

A friend of mine had a tornado hit his house last year and took out several of his trees, the roof and a portion of his house. His Kawasaki Ninja was on its side stand near his garage and was untouched. Maybe it was luck but maybe it shows how stable a bike is in wind!:don'tknow:

Here's a little video of Goop and I stopping at a lookout about 2300 feet above the desert floor in Anza Borrego Desert. We had to hold on to our bikes and couldn't even put them on the sidestands! We opted to continue down the mountains to lower ground, cross Yaqui Pass rd. to Banner Grade to head back west.

Goop dismounted but watch him as a gust almost blows his bike over and he grabs it. :eek:

haha yes!

What you guys explained is exactly what I have been doing. Side stand with wheel locked and in 1st gear pushed forward. Nice. Good thing there is a nice corner near a privacy fence I can park to block some wind too.

Figure out which way the wind is blowing and then park your bike so that the wind is blowing against the side stand. Wind or no wind, the bike should always be parked in 1st gear.

I never put it in gear on flat ground. Like starting it before I get on while I gear up without having to go to N.

Well yes, I suppose that you're correct in that respect. Or... or! You could leave it in gear while parked, but then pop into neutral before you start it. At least that's what I do. Flat ground or not, I do not trust any situation that might cause my bike to roll while on its stand. I've seen someone bump into parked bike that was in neutral and cause it to roll forward enough to start to fall over. Thank goodness my friend was there to catch it.

I leave mine in gear even while in the garage. I always have friends/family over and we almost always end up in the garage. At some point, someone is likely to lean up on, bump up against the bike, or whatever. Heck, even I bump up against my bike sometimes. The last thing that I want is for a slow drop for any reason, even if there's a very low chance of that ever happening.

Yes, even in your own garage.

Someday you won't be paying attention and you'll bump it just right, and over she'll go. It's not worth it to not put it in gear. It takes all of 2 seconds to pop it into neutral. The only time I'll consider leaving it in neutral is on the center stand when the rear tire off the ground makes the gear pointless.

Or you could use your parking brake (I made this from a Velcro cabletie that came with my laptop)
Just curious as im not sure but will that turn on the brake light and wear the battery down?

Hmmm now that i think i about it i guess the brake light doesnt work without the key in.

Typically for me it's (in gear) kill switch, key, roll to take ip chain slack, side stand.

I put mine in neutral, turn it off (kill switch then key (the order probably doesn't matter)), PUT IT IN GEAR, roll forward, lock steeringwheel..done. I put it in neutral first do adjust the position of the bike then put it in gear once the bike is where I want it.

All the info will be helpful especially since the weather here has been extremely unpredictable..more so than usual at least.
