Don't eat at McDonald's on South West Marine Drive in Vancouver.

When you're in Vancouver, skip the McDonald's on Marine Drive.

That's because the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that one of the employees there has a human right not to wash her hands when working in their kitchen.

Beena Datt claimed that she developed a "skin condition" that meant she couldn't wash her hands in compliance with McDonald's hygiene policy. That's the same hygiene policy that makes McDonald's like an embassy to Canadians travelling overseas -- when you're in a Third World country, and tired of eating in hygiene-challenged local restaurants, you can count on a western standard of cleanliness and quality at McDonald's.

In B.C., McDonald's hygiene policy isn't just a matter of corporate pride. It's a matter of the law -- both the Health Act and the Food Premises Regulations. And then there's B.C.'s Food Protection Guidelines issued by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. McDonald's subscribes to all of them. Hell, they probably helped write them.

McDonald's is fanatical about hand-washing, to their credit. They have hand-washing rules. Not just the obvious "wash your hands after the bathroom" rules. But other rules, like wash your hands after shaking someone's hand. Wash your hands after retrieving food from the freezer. Wash your hands after touching a door handle. They even have a chime that goes off every hour. It's a "we're all going to wash our hands now" chime. Seriously -- see paragraph 23 of the ruling.

LOL thats crazy Dennis. I would like a big mac and side of fromundacheese.

I've made my opinions about MacDonalds clear on these hallowed pages before. But this is just political correctness gone mad. Whilst an employer should be sympathetic to employees ailments, if you can't maintain basic standards of food hygiene in a restaurant, get out the 'kin kitchen!

I like soil, but not THAT much. I bet EVERYONE will now go there anyway, just to see the chaos of one employee having dry hands.

if that is the case i hope that they force the employee to wear new gloves every time they come out of the restroom.

This reminds me of the Muslim who refused to take off burka for DMV photo (still under litigation?). Folks, this is where we are nowadays....thanks to attorneys who have way, way too much time on their hands.

Just another reason why I don't eat fast food. It may be a policy that they wash their hands, but how many policies don't get followed...

Odds of me eating at any McDonalds - 0%

Cleanliness and quality?
McDonalds?

Actually, McDonald's is your best bet for a clean and properly maintained restroom throughout the world. Mexico, Russia, Italy and probably in every other single country where McDonald's works. It really is a godsend because in many countries businesses blow a gasket if a non-paying customer tries to use a restroom...with many of them not to Western standards. I travel to other countries a lot and I know that if I need to use a restroom and that if there's a McDonald's there's hope.

That's really disgusting, and even more so if she doesn't wear gloves. I guess rules only apply to certain people. She should be FIRED!!!!!

Quite agree, She has probably got contact Dermatitis from the soap. In the UK you can't work in the food industry with that condition. She is unfit for work, get rid.
IMO Mac what ever and burger queen don't count as food. Don't eat their period.

Well, I know it's fashionable to diss McDonald's but it persists as a gold standard among the world's restaurants. It's truly an icon in the restaurant industry. People used to blow a week's wages to purchase just one meal at a McDonald's (i.e., Russia during the early 90's). It remains wildly popular in many countries. Some Americans come off as "haute cusine" types but you know what, when they are abroad, where does one see a lot of them? Answer: Yep! You guessed it. And, they walk in, order unabashedly in English. You can point them out a mile---er, make that "kilometer"---away. It's almost like: where would they go if there wasn't McDonald's? Would they starve? Now, this isn't to say that I'm in love with McDonald's but there's sub culture phenomenon associated with this chain. It's quite remarkable. Now, any comments about Taco Bell? (probably doesn't exist even one restaurant abroad).

Bacon, egg McMuffin, yummy.

People can be very pompous about fast food, it is what it is. I'm happy to say I went to the very first McDonalds in the UK in Woolwich London. Prefer Burger King these days if I do have a fast burger.

Where? In Russia? lol
some of the restrooms in Moscow and St. Petersburg?
In Russia McDonald's-food unpopular: unpalatable, take cola with one's patty :(

we have our own russian delicious food )

Having worked in various fast food joints in various cities and states in my younger years mI can tell you McDonalds is no different than any of the others when it comes to actually maintaining employee hygeine standards. That is to say very few employees wash thier hands at all.. let alone every time they're Supposed to. That's right.. the guy throwing the raw meat on the grill (without using gloves I might add) is also the guy getting your buns and vegetables together.

Do I still eat fast food? Occasionally, I'm not overly obsessive about how my food is prepared as long as it's not intentionally sabotaged. You'd be amazed at how much crap you ingest everyday without realizing it, from skin dandruff and hair to pounds of bacteria. What doesn't kill you, well.. doesn't kill you.
