Well so far my trip has been wet and very cold and windy.... still have to finish my RR but i'll probably do that when i get home as it's gonna take a while and im beat. In Erie PA right now in the hotel next to splash lagoon (by coincidence, unplanned lol).

Anyways heres some pics from the AF museum....
WWII Luftwaffe fighter...believe this is the Messerschmidt Me 262

"D" revision of the legend....

YF-12: Prototype designed to be an interceptor very similar to the SR-71 which is used as a reconnaissance plane, built to fly higher and faster than enemy threats

The Giant white jet you see in some of these pics (in the Research and Developement hanger) is the Valkyrie (this is only one left in the world, only 2 made, 2nd blew up after in air collision)

takes up the whole hanger... took two pics to show enormity of it.

Nope, the Air Force doesn't know anything about Roswell or UFO's

(built by Canadians) was considered to unstable to fly more than 35 mph and was unstable anything higher than 3 ft off the ground!

Eisenhower himself sat on this can during his presidency on Air Force One

Another thing i want to note.... all of these were taken with my new Drift hd170.... and all of these pics show these planes in wayyyyy more light than i was seeing from my eyes... and i had the exposure as short as it goes lol.

A-10 "Warthog" A.K.A. Thunderbolt II-If i was going to be in the AF this is what i'd want to fly :thumbup:

Best Shot i could get of the SR-71 "Blackbird"...with both this and the YF-12 they parked it in very inconvenient spots for photographers lol

Great pics! The 262 came in as the piston engine fighters were becoming outdated, the mustangs could still hit them by surprise, but mostly got outran if they missed. If I remember correctly, the 262 was Germany's first production jet engine fighter. Sorry, I like airplanes:BLAA:

Hehe i'm always in for some good plane info.... it seems people who have bikes tend to like planes too.... i know a bit about planes but not alot about the WWII German planes... better with the Cold War Era stuff lol

Didn't hear anything while i was here, mind you we were just on a self guided tour... only part that i was with a group was on the ride to the R&D and presidential hangers (need background check etc, as these hangers are on the active airfield).

IIRc the 262 could pretty well hold it's own against the 'Stangs but came a little too late to help Germany turn the war back in it's favor?

DXH, thank you for bringing back some great memories!
I arrived at Fairborne OH on a Saturday night in 1983, shiny new AF Lieutenant ready to start my new job on Monday, and I spent most of Sunday exploring the mighty AF Museum, although it was only one hangar then (it had expanded to two the last time I was there, and I thought I'd read that it's now three hangars!) Spent many, many subsequent weekends exploring the place.
When I was there the "Valkyrie" was sitting outside, and the humongous B-36 (which had to have the hanger built around it) wasn't there yet. My landlady was one of the women in WWII who ferried P-38's across the Atlantic, and her own uniform is the one on display there.
Man, I'm grinning from ear-to-ear, and will probably have cool dreams tonight. Thanks again! :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

Yep 3 hangers (not inlcuding the two "on base") and a half a hanger for the missle museum.... oh forgot to add that pic lol

I Highly recommend this trip for anybody who has an interest in Avionics :thumbup:

You could spend hours upon hours there with all the info they've put into it.... they're also looking to add ANOTHER hanger when they get enough donations... guess i'll be back in the near future!

I looked and looked, couldn't find one and asked.... the guy i spoke to said they didn't have one but were working on getting one and were actually planning on making an Aardvark memorial! :thumbup:

Another cool thing is the hotel i stayed in was literally right across the street from the place... so i got the privilege to see some military jets/planes take off.... including a c-130 hercules, and i'm fairly sure i heard the unmistakable roar of an f-22.... usually you only see this stuff at aircraft shows, but it's a daily thing there... maybe i'll go back and buy a house there lol

WHEN (not if!) you make the trip Humpy, Try and hit Oshkosh Wisconsin during Airventure too.... think it's one of the biggest airshows in the world... couple weeks long... i've seen everything from a P-48 to an SR-71 to a B2 spirit there... They have all sorts of stuff, Migs, F-15's, and i'm sure an Aardvark.... the last two times i've gone something crashed... haven't been back in a couple years, but it's the mecca of Airshows :thumbup:
