So I stoped by my local cycle shop a couple days ago to order some new blinkers and was talking to there mechanic about anything I could do to add power and the cam was brought up ive read a little about doing this and everything ive read says that its more work then what its worth but thos guy said that it can be done real easy and it will really wake the motor up to install a r6 drag race cam or road race cam and according to him it is as easy as just droping it in, no need to worry about cam gears or any timing issues. That being said im not exactly a small guy 6'1 200lbs and have been thinking of upgrading to a larger bike that fits me better (fz1) even though I love the compactness of the fz6. So I dont know if I want to spend the time or money trying to hop up my bike or save the money and go bigger what do y'all think

I would think it can be done... If the spring can take the lift, I don't see any problem. When you do an engine mod, it all need to work together. From the airbox to the tail pipe. That include ECU. In that kind of mod you will need more than a PCV, you might need to reflash your ecu and do few pull on the dyno to make sure everything is fine.

One more thing... I'm not sure what is the difference in rev limiter between the 2 bikes (mine rev 12500) but if I was going to use your cams in my bike... I'll hit the rev limiter before I get on the cam...

In other words, might be better to get a bigger bike.

One thing I want to mess with when time comes (valve adjustment) is changing the timing. I use to fine tune engine on oval track racing, and you will be surprise how much you can adjust the power curve just to adjust timing on the cams. I'll try to increase overlap a bit to get better top end... not saying it work or gain a lot... worth the try.

You know I didnt think about that the rev limiter issue but then again that is prolly why he suggested if I wanted to go that route to get a drag race cam where I could actually make use of the power, but as far as the timng goes how would I adjust it on the bike ive built a couple motors and would like to think I know a little but those were a 350 and a 383 that I used in a little truck that I used to play around at the dragstrip with. So most of my knowlege is old school timing light and distributor

I wasn't taking about timing spark advance. The actual camshafts. We use to slot the camshaft pulley and actually changing the timing when the valve open/close in relation with the crank. Doesn't need much of a difference. 1-3 deg max.

Not sure how it will work on a FZ6, but on mine I want to try -1 deg on intake/ -3 on exhaust cam to start. I went on the dyno twice already for a back to back exhaust test. At 10500 the HP curve drop like a water fall. I just want to try to push it another 600 to 800 rpm and improve the top end a bit. I'll do a run before and after... I don't want to loose too much in the mid range. But just increasing overlap should make the engine breath a bit better on the upper range without hurting the bottom end too much.

I talked a little more to him about it and was asking more about the drag cam and he was telling me that they get them from a place over in england and they are a custom ground cam so not a brand new one but they are still about $500. Also being that it is designed for drag racing it is suposed to give a whole lot more bottom end power and still way more then stock on the top. Im getting more and more intrested

Where did you notice the power most?

It is more in the mid to high rpm range. But with the juice box helped more with low to mid range power. The cams have more lift and longer duration.

At the crank. I am hoping to get it the dyno soon. To see what it is at the wheel. But it pulls hard in the upper rpm range.

i would be real intrested to see the dyno sheet if you ever have it done especially since your running the stock r6 cam and im thinkin of going with a upgraded r6 cam. With that and a couple other items im sure the little fz6 could hit triple digits. do you have any other mods?

On a side note, unless you feel cramped, 200 lbs is nothing for this bike. My wife and I top 450lb and the bike still handles us just fine. The suspension on the other hand...
