Horny naked member's this is for you...

I want to replace my stock horn with a air horn on my naked FZ6. I want to start a discussion with StreetFighter member's who have replaced they're stock horn.
The key question's are: What horn did you purchase? Where did you mount it? How you installed it? Are you happy with the result's (aesthetic's and performance)? PLEASE ADD PICTURE'S OF YOUR FINAL PRODUCT!

I've got something similar to this:

My bike has the Buell conversion, so I don't have a ton of room for the aftermarket horn. After searching and searching for a spot, I fixed it up this way. Bare with me on the pictures as they aren't the best, but I think you'll get the idea.

From the front/left. The horn sits behind the windscreen but points sideways just above the turn signal. It's attached to a home made bracket that's attached in the channel on the front of the upper triple, where the fork goes through it. This has proven VERY stable and doesn't inhibit the sound of the horn at all. Of course, you probably don't want to be to the left of me if I blow it...lol.



From above. You can see how the bracket the horn's attached to attaches to the front of the top triple. It's held in place by the pinch bolt at the top of the left fork.



This horn is pretty good. It's pretty darn loud too. Although this is the second one I've had on the bike. I learned the hard way not to face the opening of the horn toward forward or it quickly becomes filled with road debris and bugs and causes the horn to stop working.

its really not noticeable to me and other people where i put it as you can see in this picture. I split it up and mounted ther compressor to the existing horn bracket which worked out great. nice thing is its facing in the direction i want it to blow as well.

I have a Stebel so I can't help but honk it from time to time.

If you have a sharp eye you can see it in this pic.

I have a Stebel and it has saved my butt here in Vegas A LOT!

The trick about the horn, you must have the ability to use it before the hazard that you have identified develops to a point in which a corrective measure must be taken.

As others have mentioned, you can't rely on your horn all the time, but with a Stebel, you can rely on it a heck more than the stock.

I have noticed that my needs to use the horn has decreased signifcantly since the installation of my Headlight Modulator.

I cut the horn up with some tin snips. in this picture at the time i had the horn tie wrapped to the side radiator plate. i didnt like that setup so i removed the side plate and gorilla glued a small L bracket to the horn. i then used the lower bolt(radiator bracket screwhole) and a lockwasher to keep it from moving. the compressor is mounted inside the airbox with a few holes drilled in it. no signs of any performance loss at all. Ill get a current pic up soon.

Any delay with your use of a hose to the compressor rather than direct connect?

I've got mine mounted inside the upper fairing left side, like Boneman - works great, just wonder if I'd gain much dcb volume reaching the cagers if it was outside like yours...

no delay at all. works as soon as i hit the button and its damn loud for sure.

I have replaced the stock with a Stebel compact,mounted in the same spot, which I think is where one of the fairing stays would be. I will grab some pics of the mounting I did later today and post tonight, still trying to sort out the relay stuff but getting there.

Adrian, is it too loud? Good for others to hear you but does it hurt YOUR ears? My hearing is a bit sensitive so I'd worry about that.

It's a tad loud if you're testing with the bike off and no helmet, but once you're trucking down the road with helmet on, bike running, wind moving past, it's a great sound. On the interstate I'd be cool with even a little more UMPH to it, but it's a great improvement over the stocker.

The thing is, it's not just about the horn simply being heard or not heard - for example, if someone is driving along and realizes they're in the wrong lane for their turn with plenty of time to wait for you to pass them before moving over to your lane, they are more apt to wait for you to pass before moving over. However, if they don't realize they need to merge until the last min, they stress and panic and don't have the time to make a more rational safe manuever, such as "I could just turn at the next light; it's not a big deal". At that moment it's not about them seeing/hearing you or not, but making your safety a higher priority and overcoming their emotion of panic with a more dominant emotion.

Sounds silly, but think about it - a horn may be just a sound, but it communicates a message psychologically and emotionally - you need to override a decision they've made mentally or a stressful emotion they are feeling about a situation with something greater than what they're feeling. That's why people in fact hear "meep meep" horns and don't do a dang thing different than what they were going to do anyways - it doesn't command a change. The stebel fixes that.

I do the same thing when I'm driving a cage - if another cager honks at me with a real-man beefy horn, I feel they have the dominance, chutzpa, umph that I need to get out of their way, I would be safer to stay clear, they aren't going to drive like a granny. It's almost primal.

I subscribe to the "don't get into the situation in the first place" line of thinking, but love having the stebel at my fingertips, literally.

After lots and lots of niggly little problems that was easily reolved with a new relay I have a ripper LOUD Stebel mounted almost in the same location as the original horn on my naked.
I bought the wiring loom and relay with the horn and spoken about by a few on this forum, the original relay is not worth a rats....
so after replacing it at lunch today I gave it a little TOOTand then another
TOOT

its gonna make people sit up and wonder where the semi is

Hi Kazza, no, it is plenty loud but inside the helmet and only used when needed I think it should be ok. I wont be hitting it for hellos and goodbyes, this one is reserved for the "look out you idiot, I'm already using this lane" occassions
