I have just got the us of an e-reader and must say I am really impressed with it.
It's my birthday in August and was debating on either an up to date e-reader or a Tablet which I believe can also do the same job as well as all the web things.
Has anyone got any links to any e-book sites that has access to "Free" 20th century books.
Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed reading the Dickens, Jules verne etc books.
But would like to find some books of my favourite authors.

I am leaning towards a tablet with wifi capabilities as we only have one laptop at home and competition is hot to get on it.
Primarily though I want to enjoy reading.

I am a big e-reader fan. I got one of the very first B&N Nooks and I love it! However, if i were to choose now, I'd go with a tablet - I'd like to have email, and browsing capabilities for research (i need to read up on market news every day for my work). That said, however, if you are only interested in just reading books - e-reader is the way to go - it "concentrates" on what you want it to do - present you the book and you don't have to pay battery and weight penalty for other features you don't use. Just my 2 c.
 
I bought myself an ereader and it's great for books in the right format. The lightweight and long battery life make it super convenient. However; it doesn't handle pdf files very well and converting pdf's to the right format doesn't work very smoothly.

I also have an iPad (from work) and it's great for reading too, except for the glare and the weight. If I'm sitting inside on the couch it's fine. In bed the weight is a nuisance and in the backyard the glare makes it almost unusable.

The iPad is a great thing to just have around. When something pops in your head and you want to look it up, the instant on of an iPad is perfect.

I'm sure the other tablets are just as good.
 
If you are just reading, I would say to grab a kindle from Amazon. Comes with Wifi and I dont think its ever been cheaper. Also, the screen is very easy to read. If you want internet as well, grab a tablet. Depending on your technical skills with computers I would say that should grab an iPad if you dont mind the price and enjoy locked in/seamless software design or an Android based tablet that is more open source and you have more freedom with, but might need more updating /etc.
 
The new asus transformer tablet is powerful, can attach a keyboard to it and it is reasonably priced. tigerdirect has the 16gb model for $399 I think.
 
I like the look of the new ARCHOS G9 tablets not available till September, but big Archos and Android fan so this looks good for me.

Having said that I'm getting the misses a kindle for her birthday.

eInk is using different display technology than most of Tablets which is TFT.

If you read more graphics, videos or any media which is dynamic or colorful. Go for a tablet, any tablet using IPS screen will be your best choice.

However, if you read text a lot. No doubt you should go for any eInk screen ebook reader.

I have played with more than 10 different type of tablet or eBook readers, yes, I am working in that industry. In the end of day, I'll have TWO tablets. One for reading my text books and the other one do the entertainment job. Maybe one another using as a digital notebook(the pencil and paper way), maybe.
 
I voted for a table...I have a Nook (Color) and a Ipad2 and I end up using the Ipad2 more because Ipad2 is more user friendly and has the required apps for both Nook and Kindle. And plus you can do much more than just read...
 
I have a kindle for reading my books and an ipad2 for all the other stuff. Works well for me as the weight and screen of the iPad aren't as good for reading. I would vote to get both, plus if you get the kindle with free 3G you always have access to Internet for downloading books and it does have a web browser(black and white), that works with gmail. I opted for wifi versions of both to save money as I have wii at home and can always tether off my iPhone if need be.
 
I, personally, will be getting a Kindle here shortly. I've thought about just getting a tablet and calling it a day, but I have a laptop, and a smartphone. I don't really need anything else for games or internet.

Since you would also be looking for something that you can browse the web on, I would say it'd probably be a good idea to get a tablet. I would recommend the iPad, or the HP tablet because they are both about 10" which would make browsing much easier. They both also have great OS's. The only downside to getting a tablet is going to be size, eye fatigue, and your battery life will suffer with a larger color lcd.

I am trying to read a book at the moment in PDF format.
That I may die Roaming - Google Books
The text is way to small even when enlarged. The book was first posted by one of our Forum friends and is brilliant. I am not techy enough to be able to convert the format into something e-reader likes better.

Wifi is definitely a consideration as we have it at home.
