I need a bigger tank!

A sprocket change could help with the tank range.
Speedo healer is a must though.

I agree....I would have liked a taller 6th gear, like a super
overdrive cruising gear to get the revs down...after 4th
it doesn't really seem to matter what gear you're in....
so a sprocket change would help a bit

Your right Neil  The wife's little 250 V-Star gets very similar economy to my XJR..... It all comes down to the wrist , use it & you'll burn the motion lotion , be gentle , up change quicker at lower rpm's & it'll suck less :D Now we all know there isnt as much fun in that but it works for my commute , then I 'waste' fuel on weekends :D
I haven't tried that method of riding lol.
I was just thinking back to when I had a naked bike. I used to get better range. I think this was because at speeds over 130kph the wind blast used to break my neck.
I need to go naked I reckon.

I think the worst I've gotten is about 150ish before a refill (15-16 litres norm) but I do lots of short rides and tend to ride pretty hard. Somewhere in the 170 mark is pretty normal though (sadly) unless I do long highway rides which can up to double the milage before a fill.

Been trying to change up a few gears and cruise a bit more lately to help keep the cost down.

Whats the XJR's fuel consumption like?

Come step into my office mate , have a seat  Now can I suggest a mighty XJR1300  :D
I have always used the rule that I wouldn't buy a bike that I couldn't lift off the floor.
The XJR would need stablisers in order for me to buy it lol.

I did the sprocket change dropping down a tooth at the front. I didn't like it.
I would consider changing the other way, but would like to know more about the end result first.
I have a speedo healer.

You will end up with a higher top speed, if you keep the rev's up between gear changes....

:D

and that crazy power that happens at 8000rpm, will happen at about 8500rpm instead i reckon.

I have changed my riding style to see what difference it makes to my range.
I was putting in 13 litres (€20.00 approx) and getting 130 km's.
Today I got 188 kms from 13 litres. I did this by riding at 7000 rpm instead of 9000 rpm. Not as much fun but not dreadful either. This works out at an extra one and a half trips to work each week.

Despite what people think its not that heavy mate , all the weight is kept right down low in the chassis & it is really light & nimble to throw around

When I got my 396 kilometre tank I upshifted between 4500-5000rpm & used all the gears & didnt 'blip' the throttle on the down change , boring as bat crap to ride but it proved a point & I only even planned on doing it the once  I guess the figure speak for themselves..

Incidentally I went on a high speed sports ride with Krushnuts yesterday & managed a woeful 142k's out on 19.2 litres in the XJR   Bloody thristy but this is what I looked like :D :D when I took the helmet off

I wasn't sure what you were getting at first on this thread Neil, but noticed your fuelly sig at the bottom. What the heck, so I joined it too! I have all my fuel data since day one, but no prices. Stopped entering when I got to the beggining of 2010, so there's at least 1 years data in mine.

Anyway, I seem to be averaging a bit better than you are. :BLAA:

I've been thinking a lot about my fuel the last few weeks too Nelly. I do about a 100km round trip on the autoroute, in heavy traffic sometimes, and I seem to be forever filling up. With a quick guess I'm getting around 250ish km per tank. My average speed for a journey is probably about 110kph.

I didn't think this was very good but now I see most people are getting similar distances for similar journeys. I'm still going to look at it further though. I now only use the top box in the wet (when a backpack won't do), in order to reduce drag. I'm also looking into a sprocket change too. Might investigate my squeaky brakes as well for any drag.

Keeping the revs below 8k don't happen very often as I'm usually a little late for work in the mornings :spank:
