Today, as I was riding home on the expressway, I saw a biker pushing his (I assumed) disabled bike on the shoulder of the road. I wanted to help, but I had already exited on the ramp and saw him from there.

I assumed he ran out of gas (but flat tire is also a possibility, but it's hard to push with a flat I think). Just want your guys opinion on what we could do to help our fellow bikers.

If I was in a position to stop, I would, my father-in-law stopped to help a biker not to long ago. There was two of them stopped one female and male, the females Harley broke down(imagine that). They loaded it up in the back of his truck and took it home for them, they didn't live too far away. I hope if I am ever in that predicament someone stops to help me.

I have a hard time passing by a stranded rider. I've had three cases this year where I saw a bike with rider pushing. I back up and found he was out of gas. I got off the freeway got a gas can at an auto parts store got gas and got him going. As we talked I found out he worked for the same company my wife worked for and wouldn't take money. He delivered movie tickets to her office! Haha!

Another out of gas bike was a new Ducati but now I had the gas can. Got him gas. He had no cash on him!

Another was a bike with a flat I had to turn around to get back to him on the freeway. He had a puncture so I went for a plug kit at another local parts store. Plugged it and I have a little compressor that I filled his tire with.

Guess you know my answer. :D

When I break down, I hope you're the one driving by.

Seems like you were in your car in these three cases. What if you were on your motorcycle??

I would stop if I could do it safely and help if I could. I don't have a back seat so it would have to be an emergency for you to ride out with me....

Cliff, you are a mensch (rough Hebrew translation to a good dude).

I stop to see if they need assistance or a phone call to help them out. If it's something simple like gas, I'd either lift them to the station or go pick up for them if I have the time. Regardless, we are a tight knit community, I stop whenever possible to at least see if there is an emergency that needs attending to.

Thanks Rob. I used to have a Jewish girlfriend so I'm not totally Goyum anymore! :rof: I even remember a few words. Hahaha!
My boss called me a mensch once and I thought it was something bad! Later he sat me down and we had a heart to heart. Very cool guy!
Good you help out and as usual you've cared enough to help me out 3,000 miles away when I had broken ribs. Thank you Dr/Brother Rob!

I have been helped out in the past by bikers so always stop to ask if they need help. I stopped to help a biker who had a mint Laverda Jota.
It had stopped in the pissing rain due to a faulty coil.
When he couldn't turn it over I offered to push him to bump start it.
He agreed. I was just about to put my hands on the rear of the bike when he said," Don't be stupid not there".
Bare in mind I had stopped to help him and was now wet and cold myself. I just said "Good luck mate", and rode off.

I stopped to help a "fellow service member" who had been stopped by the sheriff. He was off the bike and being padded down. This only means one thing in NC. You were doing +40 over the limit and off to see the judge. I stayed a ways off and waited for the sheriff to approach me. I simply stated that it would be a shame for him to have his nice new Daytona 675 stolen from the roadside while he was in lockup. "He is going to be in enough trouble with his CO", I said. The deputy replied plainly, "that's the risk he takes running 115 mph in a 55 zone." I whistled and said, "that's the least risk for sure!" I continued, "I ride with a local club that promotes safe and sane riding and I want to introduce our influence to him. We are all active and retired service members. Can I ask him if he'll let me haul his bike back to base?" The sheriff agreed. I spoke with the guy while he was handcuffed in the car, he agreed, and I gave him all my contact info. I called a bud who brought a trailer while I watched the bike. Then we took the knuckle heads bike to his wifey. This was about a 2 hour process. She said his Sergeant had just left to bail him out... The bike for sure would have been stolen after 4 hours. Here's the punch line... We never heard from him! Well... You can lead a horse...

I didn't know how to answer, since the answers didn't seem to match the question. Are you asking just for out of gas bikers in need, or any time? I've stopped twice - and been waved on by the bikers both times. Once was a Ducati, who waved me on very quickly. I'm sure he had help coming and was just trying to avoid being seen with a Japanese bike owner LOL. The second time was on the freeway - a cruiser. He might have waved me on for the same reason as the first.

I still don't know how to answer the poll though - I don't know if either guy was out of gas or broken down for another reason.

I pretty much stop for anyone that is broke down on the side of the road, car, truck, bike pedal bike etc.

It does help your cause if you are a pretty girl .....

It really depends on what I'm driving I guess. If I'm on the bike I will at least stop and make sure help is on the way but if I'm in my truck I stop for anyone who is obviously in trouble. I've had people try to pay for helping them out and sometimes I accept, but not ususally. I did have one nice retired couple from Alaska give me fresh caught salmon instead of money! I really like helping people who are stranded but my wife says it's dangerous. Thats why I carry twelve English Mastiffs in my truck.

Sad but being female I would be reluctant to stop. Too many psychos around. But I might pull up, keep engine running and ask if I could call someone for them. Would still probably only do it if it were a busy road... :(

I normally try and stop if I can safely do so and ask if they need a hand, I'd always be happy to let them borrow my phone to call someone (or roadside assistance), go get them fuel, or let them borrow my puncture kit if that would help.

I once saw a guy on a super old sidecar/bike rig stopped by the side of the road and ended up stopping a km down the highway from him when I safely could and walking all the way back to make sure he was ok.
He'd already rung someone to get a tow, but was good to be sure, since he was about 50km from anything!

I've also had people stop and check that I was ok, and have done the same.

I'm confused. Not where? Maybe he was trying to tell you not to touch the hot exhaust??

I doubt it was in a kind manner to avoid burning himself on the exhaust. I think the point Nelly is trying to make is that the guy was very condescending and frankly rude by telling him to "not be stupid". Afterall, he had stopped to help this guy out, get soaking wet, only to get spat in the face by this jerk.

I always at least stop, and see whether they need, or want help...

You never know when you might be in the same situation, and it's only a few moments out of a long life to help another rider..
