First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking .

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.

We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents .

We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

PS -The BIG type is because your eyes are shot at your age!

my hats off to you "older peeps". i have noticed the pussification of society and will not have a pansy little kid... I promise...

Man,
not only did we not use the seatbelts in my Grandma's cadillac, we would ride up on the back dash board and watch traffic out the rear window. I would drag my feet from the open tailgate of the pickup. I started riding our three wheeler when I was 5 all by myself and no helmet. We had a trampoline on the lawn. We would ride our bikes for miles with out supervision.

WOW! I had bad parents I guess:D

What's wrong with a pregnant woman eating blue cheese?

You supposedly get some kind of creapy illness and your kids will have three heads, kind of like if you were to eat shellfish or drink coffee when pregnant. Its the 1/100th in a million percent rule.

Just don't let the folks in NoCal see this one, they'll pass more laws and regulations! :justkidding:

there is some crap (pun intended) about not being able to clean the cat box while pregnant too... at least my wife is already saying...

Yes....that's true (as far as I know) because of the amonia. Danny had to scoop the cat box for 9 1/2 months LOL.

well, she only does it once every 4-5 months anyway... (yeah, i am whipped...) so i guess there will be no real change...

There are a number of things we did as kids then that have simply been replaced by different things today. We may not have had play station but I spent hours upon hours with pinball machines. We may have played with go-carts but my grandkids play with their own dirt toys and they have their own track too. We may not have worn seat belts but then again the driving population has tripled since I was born. We didn't have to wear helmets and in some cases they still don't but then again I think people who don't qualify for next year's Darwin awards.

The world I was born into was more simplified by a long shot but then again when I was born there were roughly 3.3 billion people on earth as opposed to roughly 6.7 billion today. Technology isn't all it's cracked up to be but the complex world we live in today demands it and the only people we can blame are ourselves.

I was raised in a small Arizona town of 287 (early 1960's) and later went to southern California. Now I live in a small Kentucky town with 300 people and things are backwards as all get out to what i came from. here you have to make your own fun much like it was when I was a child. I just wish they would show the last episode of Bonanza as I never did find out what happened....

I think the last episode of Bonanza went something like this:

Hoss wouldn't let Little Joe play with the Wii so Little Joe got mad and moved to Minnesota where he married some girl and moved into a little house on some prairie or another. They had a few daughters together but he got fed up of his one daughter screaming "Pa" all the time so he left that scene and eventually wound up cruising around various towns in a Ford sedan with some scruffy bearded guy. They would, of all things, do good deeds for other people which I think is just sick....:D

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's how it all ended....;)

LMAO, that was a riot BO. Bonanza was a big thing for us as kids and we actually had the first color tv on the blocK (a Zenith 25") which was huge at that time (mid 60's). Pernell Roberts left the show and Dan Blocker died which left Candy and Little Joe. I went off to Vietnam and never saw Bonanza again so I had always wondered how the series ended. Heck, I never new how Peyton Place ended either. Man, that's some old chit......

Well I was born in the 80's but my parents were not. I did have a nintendo when I was young but I couldn't play with it for more than an hour at a time. I rode my bike around 15 miles to school with no ill effects. I learned the effects of momentum (sp?) faceplanting into a concrete step on a skate board (thus loosing my first tooth). When other kids beat me up Dad said "well, what are you going to do about it?". All of these things made me the man I am today (one who works on my own car, wasn't afraid to serve my country, and still eats all of his veggies) and I feel I am stronger because of it. Thanks, Mom and Dad. and all of you "older peeps"! My kids will be raised accordingly.

Sadly we are also the generation that made sure no one else could drink from a hose pie, eat mud pies and fall out of trees with out suing.

Everywhere I played as a kid, all the woods, bits of dirtground, fields - has been built on!! in fact back in the early 80's when building houses took a lot longer and they stopped for the summer we would play ON the building site all summer. Dens in stacked up rafters, ramps made from bricks and wooden boards and climbing frames made from scaffolding and half built house. Seems really dangerous now but no-one got hurt. We used to play cat and mouse with the local copper who would show up once a week. If he had caught us it would have been a telling off and maybe taking us to our parents for a b*llocking.:Im With Stupid:

I think that was the fat kids who couldn't keep up!

Your not allowed to say fat kids today, they are weight challenged. hats right up there with signing Christmas songs in school over "winter break". J/K:D

If i was to do today what i did back in the "old days",i would be considered a terrorist now.
