ROT 2010 Photos

So my Fred and I went down to 6th street to check out the ROT yesterday afternoon. We started at Lovejoys, walked 6th and took photos. Casino El Camino for burgers, then walked the loop again. Gotta be about 200,000 down there by now. Most of the bikes are "custom" clones of one another; eg: HDs with mail order chrome.... There were several cool customs. I liked the XS650 flat tracker, and the '69 BSA the best. Fred's bike is the turbo K75 that says, "I don't like you either."

The owner of this bike is named Charlie.

He's paralyzed from the waist down. He can roll his wheelchair into the sidecar and lock it into place, then use the pulley system to retract the ramp. It used to be that he had controls on the sidecar and steered the rig from there, but apparently the law took offense to that. So now he gets on the sidecar, and then moves over to the rider's seat to operate the bike. It's got a button activated air shifter and an air compressor under the tail to refill the air bottle. The front master cylinder operates both front and rear brakes, with an adjustable proportioning valve on the right side of the bike to keep the brakes balanced.

The man is a hardcore biker, no doubt about that.

I really like the BMW R/50/60/75? cafe, rat bike.

I spent part of this morning hunting onine for possible rat projects. For me it would have to be in the cafe family. I enjoy looking at rough bobbers, not lip-stick bobbers, but they aren't me.

Glad you liked the photos. I can't imagine what it was like after dark.

Thanks Fred. I was actually talking about these two dingy looking bikes (I love 'em) but Charlie's bike is much more interesting. How many motorbikers wouldn't take 'no' for an answer after becoming paralyzed? Not many. I've heard of an SV650 rider, a GSXR rider, and now this guy who have modded their bikes to suit their paralyzed condition. Like Hellgate said, these guys have a true love of riding. It kinda makes the rest of us look like frivilous posers.

Yeah, rat bikes are just great. Nobody wants to steal it, it's ok if it's dirty, it's flat black (best color) and as long as you change the oil and take care of the chain, you can beat on it.:thumbup:

I was thinking that his bike looked a lot like this other bike that I had a couple pics of...so I checked them out and, yep same bike. Awesome bike!
