I can't afford leather, but I do have tourmaster jacket, and reinforced jeans by icon, but I want to get some kevlar jeans. How well will my jacket hold up vs leather in this kind of a slide, and my jeans? I know my jeans will not hold up like the leathers would.
 
Leathers are not expensive as you can get them leftover/used on ebay and in closeout deals. Hell, I have got like 4 leather jackets, 1 armored jeans, 1 leather racing pants, 1 tourmaster overpants, 2 racing boots, 2 helmets.

Other important factors are armor. You wouldn't think some of the thin approved armor makes that much of a difference but it surely does on impact.

You can buy Kevlar over pants as well as other Kevlar garments at Cycleport (Pricey).
You can also buy Alpinestars pants and jackets at decent prices. There is also additional armored undergarments on the market as well as shields etc.

A friend crashed in them once and they show no sign of damage. A friend of his crashed in them twice at speeds over 100mph and is still using the same suit.

If you are seriously asking how will my jeans/street gear hold up to a racing crash on the track at 130MPH...... they won't.

The only reason leathers are so superior to textiles in a track setting is because of the hugely increased 'run off' areas a track rider can slide on/into/through.

There is almost nowhere a street rider can slide 100 yards without hitting something. (I'd be amazed if this guy slid only 100 yards) There was a safety campaign with videos in Australia, with Mick Doohan commentating. They added CGI benches, buses, phone booths, curbs, and showed the riders headed for those things after crashing. Pretty scary, if you really understand what it's indicating.

60-100 MPH stuffed under a bus, it doesn't matter what gear you are wearing. The violence of the sudden stop is almost certainly catastrophic.

On the street, where the vast majority of survivable impacts occur at 35 MPH or less, textiles work just fine. Once.

Start small, buy their Kevlar Racing Gloves for around $120.00. It will be the last gloves you will ever buy. If it falls apart, which it won't, it will be repaired or replaced. It breaths very well, great gloves for the spring and summer, not really the best for cold climates. Gloves get smelly, dirty, no problem, throw 'em in the wash with your clothes, comes out like brand new without compromising tear or abrasian strength. Try that with leather gloves, or any leather gear for that matter and they weaken everytime it gets wet.
 
I don't ride without:

My Shoei helmet
My Alpinestar or Dri-rider gloves
My Draggin Jeans (leather jeans to follow soon I think)
My Leather Teknic Chicane Jacket or my Rivet armoured jacket
My Berik GPX boots

Don't be a :squid: - it means road rash, abrasions or, even worse, death.

Gear up every time. Won't guarantee to save you, but you have a MUCH better chance of no injuries or slight injuries.

It may be a pain if you are just going 5 minutes down the road, but it will be even more pain if you get hit. It's NOT always you that causes the accident. Remember that.

Where ever you ride you're better off in good protective gear. I have a friend who is one of the fastest 60 year olds you'll ever see, go down and he hit a tree. He broke lots of bones. He was spared the additional time it took him to get to the tree and we talked about it. He keeps those leathers that the EMTs cut off of him cuz he knows they did the job on the journey to the tree and at the impact. I couldn't believe how fast he returned to riding! It seemed like 3 months. Yeah he was still sore, and his doc. prolly didn't know what he was up to, but he was out there with us! Hahaha!:rockon:

My friend Jimmy is the guy on the far right (Dainese leathers) with some other hoons getting ready to run 243 from Idyllwild to Banning, Ca.

My wife sometimes gets excited when I'm all leathered up but then, when the dangerous curves are in sight :eek: the leathers are off baby. They're off!! :rockon::spank:

I know this guy who's 60 and he's pretty damn fast too, on a beastly R1. Who could it be? :thumbup: :D
