cheap hypermotard?? That doesn't look cheap to me...

In the hands of one Frenchman, what began life as a mild-mannered Ducati 1098S Superbike, has turned into a water-cooled Hypermotard that would do the engineers in Bologna proud. Known to us only as “Krisfox”, this builder was looking for more than the standard streetbike experience. Wishing to see the more powerful water-cooled 1098 motor in a motard format, he set out to make one of his own, dubbed the Hypermotard 1098S.
The bike is built around the standard 1098 frame and motor, but that’s pretty much where the resemblances stop. Since the Hypermotard panels and accessories do not bolt-up to the 1098 framework, Krisfox had to custom fabricate nearly every other part. Hand crafting all the bodywork from foam and clay, the HM 1098S was finally laid-up in beautiful carbon fiber panels, which were painstakingly built to accommodate the bevy of parts this bike boasts.
For instance, things like the gas tank had to be re-built, which allowed for improvements to be made. As such, the HM 1098S’s tank now holds over 4.8 gallons, which should be good for more than a jaunt down the road. Helping things go faster are a custom airbox, with carbon air intakes and a pair of undertail style Akrapovic exhausts cans help expel the gases. These parts bring the bike’s power figured into the 165hp range, and with a 169kg (373lbs) weight, that’s nearly a metric 1:1 ratio. Completing the look of the bike is a carbon fiber chin, à la Ducati Streetfigher, making this bike a looker and a power house.
The HM 1098S would not be complete without some aftermarket goodness, and as such Öhlins R&T forks have been added up front, while an Öhlins TTX shock in the rear gives this Ducati some of the best street suspension money can buy. Helping shave off the unsprung weight are carbon BST wheels, clad with Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa tires. To stop all this two-wheeled goodness, radial Brembo mono-bloc brakes have been employed, thus completing the Holy Trinity of aftermarket motorcycle goodness (Öhlins, BST, Brembo).
How does it ride? According to the owner:
“It accelerated like a ball. In slow corners it has crazy handling like a 600 supermoto, and on the road its like a Ducati SBK…I am thrilled, I realized the bike of my dreams.”
If rumors are true about Ducati phasing out its air-cooled two-valve lumps, we very well could be staring into the future of the Hypermotard line….and we like it.

Interesting project! Hand crafting the frame and the body, wow!
I wonder how the Hypermotard 1098 would perform on the track :)
Very cool, thanks!

Thats a neat project...but...

why go through all that trouble when you can walk into a ducati dealership and buy this:

Ducati Hypermotard 1100 evo SP - Ducati

Well, the 1100 doesn't have the performance as the water cooled 1098s engine.

my whole argument is that the 1098S had an msrp of $20,995 where the Hypermotard 1100 had an msrp of $11,995.

THAT'S A $9,000 DIFFERENCE! So, my argument is, again, why would you want your $21k motorcycle to look like a $12k motorcycle?:tard::shakehead:

Crazy Frenchmen..first long skinny bread, then stinky cheese now this...snail with that bike?

J/K Wavex - I'm mixed. I'm not a motard fan to begin with, and with this project I see a waste of a good 1098. I do admire his fabrication and design skills, very nice.

The 1100 Evo is an air cooled 30 year old design with 95HP compared to the 1098 liquid cooled 165HP monster. Just a small 70HP difference...

For some people, looks isn't everything I guess?

If you look carefully, the guy dropped his 1098 (one of the pic shows damage to the original tank) so I am guessing that he did not want to spend $5k in replacement OEM plastics and decided to transform the bike to his likings... who knows and who cares? He did an awesome job and I'd love to rock that HM down a canyon road!!!

lol you forgot the wine :D

A waste for some and a dream for others... I test rode the Duc and it's a horrible bike for the streets imho... ergos are nasty and the mirrors don't work... I couldn't see myself rocking that thing for long day rides, so if I had one and had dumped it like this guy did, I'd most likely stay away from trying to find replacement plastics (they're more expensive than gold) and try to do something similar to what he did... much better ergos, and while I don't have riding experience on motards, I keep hearing awesome things about how much fun they are to ride...

This thing has a 1:1 power to weight ratio!!!

didnt know it was that much of a difference. I retract my previous statement in the name of power and speed.

My DRZsm 400 had 42 bhp..and was by far the most fun ive had on two wheels..it could still embarrace 600 sport bikes in the traffic light grand prix and could take corners with as much composure as a superbike..i cant imagine what how amazing it would be to ride this motard. If this bike was in production i would sell my liver to get one ,i think its awsome!

If you got the money and the imagination anythings possible..i take my hat off to this guy

There was a guy who took his motard on the track last time we went to Streets of Willow and I could not loose him! He was freaking fast and I had no idea motards could be that fast...

you can see him behind me here:

oh and check out what a good tard rider can do against a WRX (he ended up beating the WRX by 3 seconds around that tight course):

Oh yeah, they are STUPID fast on a tight course, on an open course they disapear pretty quick.

If you rode both, I bet your butt/back/arms would prefer the tard... and you wouldn't see the front while riding anyway :D

Hell yeah...tards are unbeatable on a very twisty road. In NorCal a lot fo the best roads are extremely twisty and I'm much faster on my DR than on my FZ6. It's very common for dual sports and tards to pass-up supersports in the tight stuff.

That looks badass. I like it.

And with this quote

I'm guessing all the HD/Buell vtwin aircooled fanboyism is over? :p
